Picky Foreign Dwarves
« on: December 10, 2010, 11:13:40 am »

Some time ago, a couple of goblin ambush parties came to my fort. However, rather than come straight to my fort and only reveal themselves when they trigger the defense array, they revealed themselves immediately upon entering the map.

For a moment, I was worried that my idiot haulers had gone all the way to the edge of the map to grab a pile of bones or something. Turns out the ambush parties (2 of them) had a dwarf in them. You'd think this was your standard victim of goblin abduction from some point in the past. No big deal, just more meat for the grinder.

...Or so I thought. As it turns out, the goblins immediately started to attack their dwarven friends, killing them, then running away like little elves. I don't think it caused a loyalty cascade though, since I've had a couple of permanently normal sieges since then.

The weirdness started a couple ingame years later.

What the hell? I don't recall a marksdwarf ever dying in my fort. Barring a few civilian run-ins with the local skelephant population, casualties have been pretty low.

Waitaminnit...

You've gotta be kidding me.

Apparently, not only do I have to bury my own dead, I have to bury the invading dwarven dead. To make matters just a bit more annoying, his name doesn't even show up in the engrave slab menu. And I'll probably have another ghost on my hands soon.

Any idea what causes this? I'd sort of enjoy it if I didn't have to memorialize traitors.

Forget a spouse, he needs a full time gonad wrangler.

If the skeleton is still there, it should be enough to just build a coffin and enable it for burial, then unforbid the skeleton and allow it to be entombed - memorial slabs should only be necessary if the body is inaccessible or outright gone.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

Unfortunatly, this happens to diplomats and merchants as well. I don't recall if dead friendly dwarves appear in the engraving list, but it's annoying nonetheless. Seems the game doesn't differenciate between dwarves of different civilizations, and just goes "Oh, it's a dwarf. Guess it's a candidate for a ghost then!"

Yeah, in the future you probably shouldn't strike the earth quite so hard

This can happen with reclaims as well. I'd abandoned a fortress after a massive tantrum spiral claimed over 30 dwarves, and sought to reclaim because I liked the spot and my project was incomplete. Unfortunately, within a year over a dozen of the previous inhabitants had risen as ghosts, and several of them were punting my dwarves into the 36-tile wide river to drown.

He's not a traitor, he was kidnapped and mindraped as a child. Dig him a grave in the soil in the woods, build a wooden casket down there and build a floor over the access ramp once he's interred.
