How to deal with an injured child

A little two-year-old dwarf was helping deconstruct part of my copper tower so that I could widen it. In the process, it seems that somehow there was a cave-in, and my brewer/cook and a child died. That little two-year-old got injured and was barely alive, so the dwarves carried him to one of the rooms in the tower. I turned that room into my first hospital.

When the kid was put on the bed, he had cuts and broken bones on every limb on his body, and even the nervous tissue on his spine was severed. I was certain he would die, just like the other kid did. I started up a thread industry to get the kid some sutures and dressings for his wounds, and I made some gypsum powder so that he could get casts. I built a well in the hospital so the doctor could conveniently get water for the cast, and so that he could wash his hands if necessary. I even built a traction bench for him, though it seems like it was never used.

I did all of this because the construction accident put my fortress on the brink of a tantrum spiral. The mother of the that dead kid went insane. I released all of my dogs from the cages since I didn't have a military to deal with her. Fortunately, she was not a woodcutter or miner, so the dogs took her out, even though I lost about 5 of them. Everybody was depressed. I had been making drinks, and still had no prepared food, and then my only cook died in that accident. I had rooms for only 8 people, even though I had about 35 dwarves. I had no well, no statues, no mist, nothing to make anyone happy. I had to keep the kid alive or I might have lost everything.

Unbelievably, he pulled through, despite the fact that my only doctor was actually just a tanner that I had press-ganged into service as my Chief Medical Dwarf. The kid had three infections and I was pretty certain he would die since I didn't have soap, and I still don't. Gradually, he recovered, and now, two years later, he's four years old and, except for his lower spine, he's in perfect condition. I've expanded the hospital around him and numerous patients have come and gone since he arrived. I have crutches available and waiting, but I understand that apparently these can't be used until a later version of DF comes along.

I'm probably at a point now where it would be safe to kill him without risking a tantrum spiral. However, I've put so much work into saving him at this point that I don't really want to let go. So, does anyone have any advice? Should I cut the life support, or knock him out of his bed and make him crawl or something?

remove his bed just to see what happens, then build a wall around him.

While adding magma to anything will make it dwarfy, adding the word "magma" to your post does not necessarily make it funny.

Make it a bedroom for him. He shall become a permanent installment of the hospital, bringing hope and inspiration to other patients and proving that even the smallest dwarf can overcome the harshest punishment.

Then start asking for donations.

If he has nervous tissue damage to the spine, he will never walk again.  Since DF doesn't have wheelchairs and crutches don't work, that dwarf will never move under his own power, except possibly if he has a strange mood and crawls to a workshop.  Even if you deconstruct the bed he's in, he won't crawl or do anything on his own.

Dedicate your entire fortress to preserving the life of this child. Surround that hospital with horrible traps and vigilant guards 24/7. Put in food/booze stockpiles, at least one 24/7 caretaker permanently assigned to a burrow covering the room, and levers poised to cave-in natural stone walls into the only passageway leading to the structure (and have this entrance a good couple screens away, of course).

Check his preferences and fill his surrounding space with things that he likes.

When he comes of age, find a young female dwarf and assign her to a burrow covering his bed and adjacent squares, including another bed and a quantum stockpile of food and booze.

That sounds kinda like the premise of the movie version of Silent Hill. Keep the little witch girl alive.

If you hit a dwarf with moving water with sufficient strength it will knock the baby out of the mother's arms.  The water can then be used to sweep the baby into a well or cistern for drowning.  The device which does this can also double as a mist generator.

Ooooh! And replace the floor with grates and smear blood and Forgotten Beast extract all over the place. Hell, let Forgotten Beasts wander around as long as they don't threaten the little patient.

as soon as she he is old enough, promote her him to mayor of your fort.  Also designate a meeting hall around her his bed (so she he will get re-elected)

This is a useful feature..and this is DF.. so im gonna assume its bugged
That's what cages and minecart shotguns are for!  We don't need to control them.  We just need to aim them.

I believe too he should get the commanding position of the whole fortress.
The idea of building the whole fortress around him sounds like a very interesting one, he lives the fortress lives, he dies and its magma for everyone inside !

And throw every nobles challenging his hard earned authority into magma as an example of what's to come !

I love this community 8) Half says to torch the kid, the other half says to dedicate the fortress to him. Make me wonder what will happen if a true multiplayer option is added. I imagine forum-wide civil war and blood for the blood god.

More on topic, I'm with the camp about dedicating the fortress to the kid. It seems like a rather awesome project, maybe take it to mega-project levels and build a giant statue of the kid
