Zoo?
« on: December 09, 2010, 03:47:12 pm »

Just started getting comfortable with the actual mechanics of this excellent game yesterday.I'm in my second year, and I notice about a dozen animals in my meeting place, along with goblins and wild animals in my animal stockpile(caged,of course).I want to make a zoo,but I ask myself how I would do this.Do I create an enclosure out of blocks for each animal? How would I get them into this enclosure in the first place? Can goblins be safely put into a zoo,or will they scare all of the dwarves? Thanks in advance.

I don't have useful answers for you, but just so we're clear on one thing:

If you CAN put goblins in a zoo? It is no longer a Zoo.  It is an amusement park or carnival.  Zoos don't have games like 'betcha can't hit him with a rock' and 'poke the POW with sticks'

So dwarves would be hostile to the goblins?I'd rather do this for my own collecting/catologuing purposes anyways,so is possible to make the wildlife containment center forbidden to dwarves?

You can build a zoo by placing the animal/goblin cages in a room (build menu, then cage). When you have placed all the cages you want to have in the zoo, use q to target a cage and designate it as a zoo. If i remember correctly the zoo works like a statue garden.

If you want to have the animals/goblins outside of their cages, then the dwarfs will get scared when they see them.

Tamed animals will just clog up hallways, hostile caged invaders will cause comotion and possibly hurt your dwarves. However, the only time I've gotten caged goblins was right before they killed me.

As it turns out, the pen was in fact a poor choice for melee combat in comparison to the sword.
So I just started playing this game and I accidentally nuked the moon.

What if you dug your zoo so that only exit is an up ramp blocked by a locked floor hatch.
You could then have another floor hatch with no ramp underneath that was marked as a pit zone.
You could then pit your collection, then they can pathfind unseen by your dwarves.

I tried something like this by turning disarmed invaders lose in a glass-walled pit in the centre of my meeting hall.  Unfortunately dwarves get scared through windows

I wish I had something cool to say about this.  Because it's really cool.

Me and my friend have been planning to make an under ground zoo.  Probably 20x20x3 in dimensions or something like that, we would make a glass dome under ground and create a habitat for animals.  We would pump water into it and make make fake waterfalls and shit.

Will the dwarves get the toughts 'comforted by an animal' and 'admired a carefully arranged statue' if I have both statues/cages in the same designation or do I have to designate a zoo and a statue garden?

A zoo is a fine construction, but beware!

I put a goblin hammerlord in a zoo once. One of the children found him very interesting and visited him almost daily .. well.. things turned ugly when a tantrumer destroyed the hammerlords cage and he attacked the child.

The child was saved and didn't come to any harm, since there was a party in the zoo and the military was present .. it could still be a dangerous situation, especially if you trap an FB ..

You're saying building a zoo can get children killed?! Welp better make some cage traps and trade for some beasts with the elves!
