No escaping DF
« on: December 09, 2010, 05:11:31 am »

I was just wondering has anyone else had DF cravings. Like an addiction??.... cause I have no played it for about a month now at being annoyed at not having Mayday bring out his latest graphics pack ¬¬, and I was doing fine for a while and was moving on to different games like EU 3 and miner wars and stuff.

i now look back at the dwarf fortress website and what happening with it I’m sick off all the other games now and just can’t be bothered to play them... there’s just not enough complexity for me.... and hell your characters don’t start melting in the rain.

Has anyone else found them self slowly being drawn back to DF and the community forums?

Catch phrase for DF “there’s no going back"

Na, not really.
Then again, I go about two days without tea before I start to feel too shaky to go through the working day, and I can't remember the last time I went two days without DF, so maybe I haven't gone long enough to feel any withdrawal symptoms.

I don't get addicted, I love setting it all up but I can never play it long enough to really get into it. It used to be that because of having so many dwarves I couldn't deal with it, and ironically by the time I decided to resort to this new-fangled thing called "Dwarf Therapist" They had JUST quit, so I decided not to play for a little bit. Graphics pack? Pah, I love the ASCII.

If you are that addicted to DF you just can't wait to play, try learning the ASCII :D quicker updates(well, sooner updates).

Just use other graphic packs (Phoebus is nice, if glitchy ATM) or DIY Mayday version.

Well I can go for moths at a time without playing DF. I do always come back to it, but that's because there's always more content. If it were a finite game I would probably get bored of it eventually.

I do follow the devlog religiously, though.

I'm the other way around, I love the game, but can rarely bring myself to play it.  I always end up feeling so overwhelmed by what I could do that I can't decide.  :\

I added my own sprites for mountain goat, medic dwarf and mule (I think) to the graphics set I use, is that a bad sign?

Dwarven blood types are not A, B, AB, O but Ale, Wine, Beer, Rum, Whisky and so forth.
It's not an embark so much as seven dwarves having a simultaneous strange mood and going off to build an artifact fortress that menaces with spikes of awesome and hanging rings of death.

If I may quote one of my very first posts from way back when.

Dwarf Fortress isn't a game. It's a way of life. A state of mind. Once you go Dwarf Fortress you can't go back.

I mostly read the forum. The bugs are holding me back ever since 40d has become obsolete. I do play occasionally, but after it segfaults three times in an hour, I may not play for another week or two. Also, as I'm kind of a game developer myself, I have found the truth, which is: making games is more fun than playing them.

I think being a game developer amplifies your enjoyment of DF out of sheer appreciation for the program itself. As an example, rarely will I actually see the merchant caravans in action as they trade between towns after their implementation, but the very knowledge that all that is being simulated makes me all warm and fuzzy inside.

Think of it like Sim City, except with rival mayors that seek to destroy your citizens by arming legions of homeless people and sending them to attack you.
