Technically, you COULD fill the 10x10x7 cistern with buckets.
But the besieging goblins would probably die because of sheer boredom /and old age/ before the trap is ready...

OTOH you can't have a repeating obsidian gun without pumps.  8)

LOL an obsidian gun? I guess my methods are mundane, I just spam stone-fall traps with a couple of really good weapon traps at the end and spikes at the entrance.

Well, I just had a succesfull testing run yesterday.
Basically it's a device that spawns one (sometimes two) tiles of unsupported obsidian.
I plan to use it to drop said obsidian into the volcano right next to the bridge, spraying everyone nearby with magma mist...

if you successfully weaponize magma mist, you will have achieved a higher plane of Dwarfiness.

That's not mist. That's plain old magma. That immediately drains into grates, leaving only the goblinite behind. (and is also awesome)

Magma mist works differently from normal mist.

hey wow I didn't realize they were different. I just remember reading a thread where someone converted the mist-generator to use magma, never realized that wasn't actually 'magma mist'.

Don't get me wrong, that converted mist generator is hella cool. But the creatures are dying because they path through a tile on which there are spurts of magma falling through a grate. It's convenient, too. Only iron and steel would be left behind for salvage. (and bones, apparently) No more annoying sock-management!

Can volcanoes absorb excess magma?  For example, if I wanted to make a magma-fall without pumps, could I tap the volcano, drop the magma some Z-levels, and then have a cistern drain back into the volcano?

What about a magma pool?

volcanoes are basically surface pools. however I don't expect it to as magma doesn't have pressure (pumps don't give pressure to magma) and I've never seen it do it. but you can try  ;D

No. It is not like the ocean, or aquifers. pools and 'canos keep track of fluid added.

The magma sea itself might. It has different properties (like vaporizing caveins), and I don't know if anyone has tested effects like this one.

Hmmm, I'm gonna bump this old thread looking for some advice, I went onto a volcano map, and I'm looking to design an airlock using pump power, hatches, and magma, to make a room that I can flood with magma by flipping a lever, then drain it by flipping it back off. Can someone explain pump stacks and power in detail?

This one is awesome:

Pump stacks (and power) are explained here:

http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/Pump_stack#Pump_Stack

Yeah, I'd just end up quoting that pump stack bit from the wiki. And poaching its diagrams. If you have any specific questions about pump stacks I'd be fine explaining.
