Again with the useless military
« on: December 08, 2010, 03:02:18 pm »

Okay, this has been a problem for me for a while now: Military dwarves gain skills far too slowly. I hav had a fully armed and equipped pair of hammerdwarves sparring for close to 3 years now and they are STILL only dabbling in every military skill they have.

I am using 31.18, is this a bug? or am I doing something wrong?

That still does not answer my my question (though I will be making a danger room now). Why is there such a dismally low skill gain?

Your dwarves may be slow learners or have too many distractions to train properly. It's hard to say

Danger rooms are what most people use, and that is the answer to your question.  If you're not using one, your dwarves aren't learning.  Make sure they were actually training though.  It's easy to forget to assign things to make them do so, or leave labors on so they attempt to do work (which is an odd case).  By slow learners, he may be pointing out that some dwarves have intrinsic abilties (things that make them unique) that make them good at some things and bad at others, no matter how much they try to learn.  You might just have a potential mismatch.

the lower leveled they are, the slower they level up.  Once they start getting higher levels the green military dwarves will be able to train without a danger room at reasonable rates (thanks to having experienced teachers.)  However, nothing beats the danger room, except wrestling elephants to death ;D

This is a useful feature..and this is DF.. so im gonna assume its bugged
That's what cages and minecart shotguns are for!  We don't need to control them.  We just need to aim them.

Sparring is probably the best form of training. Give them wooden training spears or something like that, and capture some hostile wildlife or goblins. Let them "spar" with the creature until they eventually kill it.

After a while they will be quite skilled.

Yah...individual training doesn't do much, gotta draft them first, amirite?

I'm actually quite nice IRL, but you people have to pay the price for that.

Now stop being distracted by the rudeness, quit your accusations of trollery, and start arguing like real men!

if you can arange for some large powerful creature to be disabled somehow such that it remains unconscious then they'll train up really really fast wrestling it.

I recommend balls of flesh, floating guts, etc.

Giant Earthworms might also do.

I haven't noticed a major problem. There is a huge part of the learning curve that is slow and tedious. Once you hit expert or something, it seems to increase much faster.

There's a ton of factors involved too. Learning ability. Focus. Teaching ability for demonstrations. Teachers can only impart so much of their total skill level to learners, so people with little skill teaching others doesn't yield much of a skill increase.

And yeah, sparring seems to be the real issue. With wooden training weapons, it took about three years to get a handful of dwarves to average skill in weapons, and above average fighter skills. This is why I always turn the first migrant I can find with military skills into militia commander. Those extra starting points have a huge trickle down effect in how fast the rest of your dwarves learn.

I always liked the danger room using goblins instead of spears, but these days that's a little risky.
