Female Dwarfs and Axe Soldiers...
« on: December 08, 2010, 12:07:48 pm »

I may just be overthinking this, but no matter how i picture it, i just cant wrap my head around a female Dwarf, wearing armor and wielding an axe without the idea seeming strange somehow. It just never looks right, and sketches of such things disturb me (http://athenatt.deviantart.com/art/Freja-Dwarf-Shield-Maiden-82779933?q=boost%3Apopular+in%3Atraditional+dwarf+female&qo=2)

So, what do you glorious maniacs people think when you try and visualise a female Dwarf?

my imagination tries to distinguish between male and female dwarves and fails miserably.  A load of short hairy angry drunks in a hole in the ground is as far as i can get really.

I visualize dwarves like Terry Pratchett does; Under all the layers of chainmail, leather and beard, it's impossible to tell what gender any dwarf is. Dwarf Courtship is mostly devoted to figuring out what gender the other dwarf is.

Also, that picture would disturb anyone. She's ridiculously top heavy.

I seem to remember a hilarious picture from the fanart thread of a female dwarf surfing over spike traps on her baby. Anyway, I can't imagine female dwarves in DF without them looking like the one in that picture. I can't seem to find it, though...

Think of it like Sim City, except with rival mayors that seek to destroy your citizens by arming legions of homeless people and sending them to attack you.

Hmmm, it's alright, perhaps a little bit too much time spent on certain anatomy but whatever floats your boat.

Women tend to either be wisened old crones or attractive wenches, and anything in between. Not that I care much, the only times I've ever paid attention to genders is A) When a Dwarf gives birth. Oh, what do you know, Darth Vader has a uterus. and B) When I noticed in DT that the initial dwarves were all female except one [I named him Studly] and in the first wave, six were men, and one was a woman [I named her harlot]

Yeah, this. Also, that picture is disturbing because she doesn't have a beard. The thought of beardless dwarf ladies would disturb anyone.

Gimli: It's true you don't see many dwarf women. And in fact, they are so alike in voice and appearance, that they are often mistaken for dwarf men.
Aragorn: [whispering] It's the beards.
Gimli: And this in turn has given rise to the belief that there are no dwarf women, and that dwarves just spring out of holes in the ground!
[Eowyn laughs]
Gimli: Which is, of course, ridiculous.

I watched all 3 of the extended versions of LOTR last week and this is what I think. Thank you Gimli.

This.

I do tend to think of them as being fairly human-like, just shorter and stockier. I'm not a fan of fembeards, so...

That's the great thing about this forum. We can derail any discussion into any other topic.
It's not an embark so much as seven dwarves having a simultaneous strange mood and going off to build an artifact fortress that menaces with spikes of awesome and hanging rings of death.

I don't have this problem, as I very carefully hand pick my army. My elite squad will have genetic traits that make them better warriors for Armok sake, so I make sure not to let women in the army. Not that I'm sexist, I just don't want little Urist McBaby to become a eat shield.

This suddenly makes it all seem ok :)

And to the guy above me, how dare you! Armok loves babies. Will you deprive Armok of babies?!
