Dwarf Housing Project
« on: December 07, 2010, 06:08:06 pm »

This is my first post.....and I am a newb. That aside, I've been working on dwarf housing. Here is my magic door windmill housing scheme.

this layout includes:
    4 Noble Suites
    16 Mid lvl rooms
    24 Low lvl rooms

Central access point
Longest Walking Distance is 19 spaces
Reduces the number of required doors to 24

*edit*

this expanded layout includes:
    4 Noble Suites
24 Mid lvl rooms (net gain of 8 rooms)
    24 Low lvl rooms

Central access point has been expanded (suggestion by puke)
Longest Walking Distance is still 19 spaces
The number of required doors is still 24
Also you will notice that I mocked up the beginning of a mirror thru the east corridor

**edit**  OCD got the better of me again. its no wonder I've never let a Fort go past 2 years

pretty, but I don't see the point of those big hallways if hardly anyone is going to use them.

While adding magma to anything will make it dwarfy, adding the word "magma" to your post does not necessarily make it funny.

Its necessary for the symetry, although I'm sure there is room for improvement

It allows the 2 3X1 rooms at the end of each corridor, cutting it down to 1 wide corridors would reduce it to 1 at the end of each hall, or converting them to 2 wide would allow a 2X3 room at the end of each hallway. Nice aesthetic with this though.

A man would see that as a difficult challenge.
An elf would see that and despair.
A dwarf would see that and say, "Bring it on."

Certainly one of the better efficiency based designs I've seen.

Should try your hand at a housing setup without a central access shaft and do something a bit more with the hallway.

That's sneaky, what you did with the doors. I may use them like that.

one-wide might be a little small for a hallway with.. what, 9.5 rooms on it or so?  two-wide is generally the minimum i use unless it is for access to a very small number of rooms, and that does hose with the symmetery a bit.

I would actually knock out those central four doors and the walls around them, so those four "transit" rooms or whatever they are become a larger open space.  could decorate it with statues or something.  of course if you're using those corner clusters each for one noble, then i guess its okay.  i tend to house my nobles in a different area from regular dwarfs.

I can already see a few new variations. I will have to play with it some more. I should have a few more pics posted this evening.

diagonal doors? efficiency? doors not attached to a hallway?

that are three things I avoid in my fortress at all costs :/

The only drawback I can see to diagonal doors is that it's impossible to isolate one room (say because of potentially crazy dwarf or whatever) without also locking the other 2-3 rooms.

Uhhh....  I hadn't even considered that. Never had a Dorf go crazy, always seem to have material on hand. Might also be realated to my inability to stick with a fort for more than 2 years though.

Not from moods, I mean from general miserableness or other problems.  I once had a dwarf who took a lung wound, but survived and recovered enough to move around.  Problem was, she kept fainting and causing general irritation so I locked her in her room and let her die of thirst.

It's really a minor quibble, situations like that don't crop up all that often.

Couldn't that be solved by creating a danger "FUN" room?

Dwarves get disturbed by traffic, so having them path through eachothers bedrooms is not nice.  :-\ nevermind, i was wrong

Looks super purdy though! :D
