What's your opinion of oil wells being put in?

I can see oil as something that could burn, but is not inherently hot. If you built an oil smelter perhaps it could require one charcoal to start the fire.

Perhaps it could be some sort of super-fuel with a drawback? It could create miasma when used. Since oil (especially whale oil) has a nasty stench.

Lamp oil? Perhaps for torches? Dwarves complaining of a lack of light would create the need for torches. Also oil would be a good siege weapon. Quite cinematic.

Yeah, this is a useful technique.  You can further refine the results like so:
