I got through all the tutorials (the last 4 are non-existent presently, at least from what I saw) and the game isn't that bad.
It mostly reminds me of a complex version of the old game Ascendancy.
I'm going to give it a try and see what I come across as I advance in years (which seems to be the big thing). There may be a 5 second interval thing, but the beginning is supposedly done in multiple day increments. The only time the second or minute intervals seem to go into use is in battles (from what I read).
It's a bit confusing, because there isn't a main screen. There is the initial task-bar you get and all the screens after that, you have to toggle open, even the system map view. I was also reading that the Conventional start is probably a bit easier on a beginner, seeing as you have to learn a lot about the initial structure of your first planet instead of starting off space-worthy.
My father will be most interested in the game, most likely after I get past understanding the game and then helping him figure it out. He's been playing a game of Empire Deluxe for the past 10 years.

It's a massive world he generated way back when and he plays it very little here and there. Some times he leaves his computer to go do other stuff while the enemy computers take their turns, it takes a long time.
