Aurora, claimed to be DF but in space
« on: December 07, 2010, 03:03:02 pm »

I just saw this game being talked about (in a thread where people were complaining about df being complicated, pffft, i guess it's toady's bad that he made a game that requires an IQ).  Well one person linked my to aurora, which and claimed it's DF complex but in space.  I imagine a lot of you probably know about this game already so I wanted your opinions.

here's a link too,  If you are using vista or win7; i don't know why; but installing it in programs the game will not work; but install it in my documents and it works fine.  It's noted in the forums too that others had to do this to.

Only thing i know so far is this game will take me a full day just to go through the tutorials.

I was looking for pictures of in-game, I found one.. that was it. All the others were attachments or something that only showed text and no picture... maybe I have to make an account? Is there no videos of it either? I could find anything off google. I wasn't sure what to search for... Aurora was too generic.

that is the screen shot part of the forum

so far I generated my first universe and holy Shitload of options to choose.  This game does require the tutorials to play as far as I'm concerned.

mmm seems like you have to register to view the screenshots otherwise it just shows them as broken links.

We have a huge thread about this game in the other games forum: http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=47678.0

I'm pretty sure those were the screenshots. This game has no graphics (even less than DF)

I believe your right; except they have been making graphic packs too for planets, and some of the in game screen's ive gone to while playing are somewhat graphical.

I guess it's a you have to play it to see what in-game looks like.

I'll have it a go I suppose ans see how things go.

Almost sounds like from that initial post, like the old game Ascendancy. Loved that game to death.

I've been looking through the forums, and there doesn't seem to be any mention of a Mac version. It's a damn shame, since it looks to be an epic game, and its creator seems to rank with Toady in terms of dedication to worldbuilding and detail. Any idea how the thing will run with Wine?

1.  It's not a very good DF in space.  I say this because DF "on land" has ports for Mac and Linux.

2.  This should be (read: is) in Other Games.

So I'm giving the game a try and... wow... This is in my opinion more complex than Dwarf Fortress, but that is probably, because I know how to play DF well.

I just finished tutorial 5 and I haven't even advanced a day in game time! This is brutal, but I'll keep you guys posted on my progress.

AGGGHHHH, that game gives me a headache. From what I can gather, it's Dwarf Fortress, if DF were set in space, had no graphics to speak of, and was controlled entirely through a Windows 98-style interface. When I first started playing DF I was confused, but I could at least get an idea what I was looking at. Here, I can't tell if I'm playing a game or performing data entry for a software company with outdated operating systems.

Also, there's a distinct lack of magma. :P

Just like you you need toutorials to play DF? Forget that! Loosing is fun!

On a side note, lets see if I can figure out whats going on with this game.
