This is different. I would guess the right to a speedy trial is kinda waved when you commit gross treason.

Get out of my country you ignorant neanderthal.

The man has been convicted of nothing and is being tortured. The rule of law must be upheld.

Anyone might get wrongfully accused of treason, terrorism, murder, arson... either because they were in the wrong place at the wrong time, or because they did the wrong thing and made the kinds of powerful enemies who can make things appear not as they are.

Unless we treat everyone- every single defendant, no matter how obviously guilty- with the same respect and consideration until they have been proved, beyond a reasonable doubt, in an open court of law, then we will subject innocent people in the thousands to penalties, imprisionment, and death.

And don't even hint that even the the evilest mass murder should be tortured. We are the United States of America. That was a nation that did not torture, because it is a degridation of the fundamental rights of mankind, on the deepest and most sacred level. We may kill, painlessly, when it is nessicary to stop a greater evil, or to remove a deadly hazard, but pain for pain's sake, in any form, is completely wrong, no matter what its cause is.

It is a deep shame that I cannot say that my nation does not live up to that ideal, but I will not let anyone idly consider putting a man presumed innocent to red-hot pokers and drowning torture.

But Manning didn't.

Oh, I think I misunderstood you.

And Assange is threatening to do pretty much that.

When did he threaten this?
What do you mean by "pretty much"?
Don't stretch the truth.

Whoa, whoa, whoa....

Show me one damn iota of evidence that Pvt. Manning is being subjected "to red-hot pokers and drowning torture". Or tortured at all, for that matter.

Detained? Yes. In less than comfortable circumstances? Yes. For a long time? Yes. That's still a long damn way from Abu Ghraib.

People on both sides need to chill the f**k out and stop either calling for this guy's head on a plate or putting him up to be Nelson Mandela.

Insurance.aes256. 'Nuff said. No one has explicitly stated what's in it, but the implied threat is that it's something as damaging as all operational data for the Afghan and/or Iraq war, location of all US military facilities, etc.

'Nuff said indeed.

Speculating the contents of that package to be something that will help you fuel your argument is completely fair.

You are bending the facts to match a preconceived idea of yours,
which I will assume you adopted after seeing it on Fox.

Black or white.  Us vs Them.  Right or Wrong.

If only science was as simple as real life issues like this one...

I keep reading opinions all over the web and am amazed by the in depth knowledge of writers.

I feel deeply humbled.  So many smart and knowledgeable people out there.

Yes, because we all know I'm just one of Nikov's sock-puppets.  Another flag-waving, hoorah, furriner-hatin', red-blooded American.  ::)

I wash my hands of this thread. The stupid has just become contagious.

Agreed. Apparently no one's ever heard of agreeing to disagree.

You raise a good point but calling me an ignorant neanderthal seems to me to be too much.

I'm outta here. I am very tired of this thread.

Hmm... how long exactly are you allowed to keep someone without charge in America?  Over here we have a 30 day limit.

I only really use this thread for watching the story develop and seeing links to related news stories.

We don't have to talk politics here, but it does pass the time.

"Solitary confinement for most of a year" is "less than comfortable" kind of like how "waterboarding" is "having a wet towel on your face".  Every day for a year.
