I have begun drafting my useless/unwanted migrants into the Meat Shield Brigade. They are armed with only a shield and are sent out first before my actual military engages.

I give mine some basic iron armor and an iron sword.  That way they're guaranteed to kill whatever noxious, toxic, instant-onset necrosis forgotten beasts I don't want tracked all over the fortress.  That, and I won't lose any legendary speardwarves with 100+ kills because a gnu with paralytic halitosis made him forget how to breathe for just long enough to suffocate.

to my own dwarves... going down to _____, where ______ killed my miner. I walled in the rest of the dolts along with food. and nothing to do. migrant waves died by the dozens, caravans too, and these guys just stuck to a farm and basically did nothing.

to others... giving elves and goblins some swimming practice. kobolds (!) go cavern-exploring along with the puppy that lands safely on him. i have never harmed humans. I actually guard their caravans! btw I build aboveground/belowground fortresses a lot.
