Wait wait wait, let's make sure this is clear.  Your "solution" is to pretend it's set in a different time than it really is?
It's better than saying "lalalalala! I can't hear you! lalalalal!

But yeah. Read the damn post you're arguing with before you decide it's wrong. I said quite clearly I thought it was placed wrong. Just so they could get an extra mobile womb issue in.

The only way to make Ridley even remotely traumatizing is Zero mission, hard mode, minimum powerups (not even the ice beam). If Samus had just finished that fight, then Ridley's return might be enough of a shock to overcome the thought of just killing it again, but since I doubt that's the game/difficulty setting that other m is supposed to follow, I can't see how that situation makes any sense at all.

...Unless other m's Samus is an alternate reality's Samus, where she isn't a fearless, extremely skilled bounty hunter, merely a skilled bounty hunter barely above average. Prime 2 could be used to explain that slightly, and it would probably make more sense than Samus afraid of a recuring giant dragonlike space pirate boss that dies fairly quickly and doesn't have the intellegence to avoid predictable attacks with visible forewarning sufficiently early to allow dodging of every attack.

Disputable.

Continuity is largely the realm of fans, and I don't get the vibe that creative types who make and design stories really care about it all that much.  (Blizzard could be an exception here with their response to red shirt guy)

I bet when they were making the game, they were tired of writing stories about badass ruthless amazon warrior samus and decided to make her more vulnerable in this one.  The fact that it doesn't make sense in the history of the series probably doesn't bother them much.

When they remade that game arts RPG lunar, I remember they justified a lot of the changes with "Sony playstation-san remembers the story differently than sega cd-san remembered it."

It was a whole different team who made this game.  Different writer entirely.

I was under the impression Sakamoto was still the writer, but that team ninja was responsible for the gameplay.  I guess we don't know enough about the dynamics of the dev team to say for certain.  Even if it was written by other writers, you've got to wonder if Sakamoto had a dictatorial or laissez-fair e approach...

No. It was Sakamoto who wrote it. He even said he'd never though much about Samus' character before, and now that he had, he wanted to set the record straight. Much more like slanted and in two pieces.

I'll admit there could be room for adding a vulnerable side to Samus, perhaps some mother issues that could tie in with Mother brain(Even though that sounds kinda shitty), or after dealing with so many metroids stealing her lifeforce she's dying or something(Also kinda shitty), or there being other Chozo in the universe that she's trying desperately to save(Slightly less shitty). Many possibilities for drama that fit into her as a character and the series. Making her like this just didn't make any sense. Sure the only alternatives I could think of were slightly crummy for a base, but not as crummy as what was used.

It all sounds to me like bad writing, the plot had never been that important up until other m, so Sakamoto was having no problems.  Then he decided he should make a game where he actually fleshes out Samus' personality, then fell flat on his face having to do real writing.  I'm not a big fan of the series myself, so maybe he was great at writing until other m.

Now I'm curious:
http://www.mobygames.com/developer/sheet/view/developerId,74231/
Balloon Fight...Kid Icarus!...a whole lot of Wario, Picross, some rhythm game...  Smash Bros...  Pinball and a boxing game...  Hello Kitty World...  :(

It looks like the last time he made a non-Metroid game with any significant plot was a Japanese RPG-like thing for the Gameboy back in 1992.

Plot is...not his forte.

And I'm pretty sure much of the writing and plot in the previous Metroid games wasn't actually done by him so much as the team. A bit like Lucas and Star Wars, really.

Previous Metroid games were more about the gameplay.  You didn't really have characters sitting around, discussing their childhood or reminiscing about past relationships.  You basically spent the game running around, solving puzzles, and blasting badguys.

But this, in itself, crafts a personality of sorts.  You get the idea that Samus is on her own out there.  That she's got nobody to call in for backup.  That she dove right into the lion's den without a second thought.  And that she's too busy kicking ass to spend time on flashbacks.

Other Metroid games did have some plot to them...  There was some backstory about who Mother Brain was, and what a metroid was.  And you had the whole thing with the baby metroid...  And the stuff with the phazon and the shadow Samus and stuff like that...  But you never really had Samus doing a whole lot of chatting or introspection or anything.

And that, in itself, creates a character.

Look at someone like Gordon Freeman, in the Half-Life games.  I don't think he's ever said a single word.  You know stuff about him...  People talk to him...  He does lots of stuff...  Saves the world a couple times...  But he doesn't say a single word.  So you get the impression that he's a quiet guy.  Maybe he's socially awkward, maybe he stutters, maybe he's just too busy kicking ass...  Whatever.  But he doesn't talk much.

It allows you to fill out the character with some of your own personality.  You can fill in your own comments and remarks, instead of listening to the game supply them.  You can decide, to a large degree, what's going on in the character's head.  In some respects Gordon Freeman isn't a separate character with his own personality - he becomes a suit for the player to wear.

And then the developers suddenly decide that they need to flesh out the character.

And this silent protagonist suddenly starts talking.  And starts having flashbacks.  And starts reminiscing about that time in band camp.

And not only is that character suddenly chatty...  But they're suddenly behaving wrong.

Samus has killed Ridley in pretty much every Metroid game there is.  By the time Other M rolls around, she's killed him off something like 4 times.  And suddenly she breaks down and regresses into a child.  Why?

That'd be like Gordon Freeman suddenly breaking down and regressing into a child when he sees a headcrab.

Fine...  Attribute it to bad writing if you like.  Maybe it makes more sense to attribute it to incompetence than to malice.  And no, it doesn't have to be canon.  But it still makes for a lousy storyline and some horrific characterization.

To be fair, every time I saw a headcrab in half life I flipped the fuck out, spammed it full of bullets and avoided the body of the thing like the plague.

So maybe its just that some fans put in a personality the writers didn't want. Certainly seems that way.

Wow, Epemeriis, you really hit the nail on the head, I think.  It's true, it's like if Link or Ness (Or Lucas) started talking (To name a couple characters I love)

I guess it would be very difficult to get the character right, but obviously it can be done well, look at Solid Snake, for example.
