My Mac has Intel but I still can't play .18!
« on: December 07, 2010, 12:24:55 am »

Yeah. I love it. And it's even better, since I think I can't download .16 or whatever didn't need an Intel Core, as my HD had to be replaced due to it breaking.

I currently have the folder df_osx on my desktop, which is basically just .18 unzipped. I open Terminal and type in ~/Desktop/df_osx/df, which is what worked for me before the HD epic failed. However, I get the following message when I do this:

dyld: Library not loaded: /usr/X11R6/lib/libfreetype.6.dylib
  Referenced from: /Users/username/Desktop/df_osx/libs/SDL_ttf.framework/Versions/A/SDL_ttf
  Reason: image not found
/Users/username/Desktop/df_osx/df: line 5:   534 Trace/BPT trap          ./dwarfort.exe

The username things are because I kind of like being semi-anonymous on the Internet.

And to clarify any future questions, my Mac has a 2 GHz Intel Core Duo processor, and runs on OS 10.4.11. I think it's an '06 MacBook.

Your problem is that it's a 10.4.11. (AKA Tiger)

Despite the fact that Toady did the changes with the complier for DF that it now uses intel based mac, he didn't know that it would hate older OS systems (Tiger and Leopard). So your best bet if you want to play the newest version of DF is to either:

1. Resort to Wine and run the PC version of DF through wine.

or

2. Upgrade to Snow Leopard (though there may be a possiblity that might not work either)

or

3. Play DF 0.31.12 if you can find it.

Shame Toady hasn't fixed the issue. But chances are the new compiler for the mac can't be fixed to work with anything below Snow Leopard. :P

Wine runs into the same problems, if I remember correctly from my pre-Snow Leopard days. (I eventually upgraded.)

Yeah, I tried Wine once, so I could use something or other, but after failing at trying to figure it out, I asked someone about it and they said it didn't run on Leopard.

I'd say the Apple OS sucked, but so do all the rest of them.

So... since I can't run the latest version without upgrading my OS, why isn't .12 available for Mac download?

Something about the licsensing rights since he uses the new compiler I'm not sure about that one.

Have your tried a program called "Crossover"? It's what I use to play DF through my mac. It's a wine based program, but it works fine for me.

If that doesn't work for you, I'll dig around and see if I have my old vanilla of .12 somewhere.

I don't know how to run Wine, actually. I tried and failed.

*cough cough*

So, uhm, can someone post a link to a Mac 0.31.12 download? I felt it would be better to post here than start a new thread. I want to be able to play DF when not at home again...

Would it be appropriate to bump for a download of .12?

There is no Mac download for DF versions 0.31.01 to 0.31.12. Toady did not compile these versions for Mac or Linux.

All 0.31.12 and later DFs require both Intel and Snow Leopard to play.

You seem to be out of luck; sorry.

My personal download archive includes Mac versions .04, .06, and .12, so I don't know what you're basing this on.  Nor do I know why Toady no longer has them available for download.

I know Toady doesn't have them on the site, and .13 to now don't play on Leopard. I'm asking for someone who has .12 for Mac to upload it to a filesharing site such as Megaupload or Rapidshare, and post the link here so I can enjoy dorfing on my laptop again.

Oops. I checked and I do indeed have .06, .08, and .10 right there on my computer.

Not .12?

Hm... there were quite a few crash fixes in .11 and .12... maybe I'll just get Snow Leopard. It only costs $30, right?
