Steel Industry needs power!

You must construct additional pylons.

I think coal would be the Vespine Gas.

Yeah, the DF equivalent to Construct Additional Pylons would be Station More Migrants in Magma Room.

It really varies depending on your map. The only way to know for sure is to use dfreveal, like other have said. How many cavern have you broken through?

I hit the magma sea about 45 levels down.
If you are really hard up for wood, do what i did and make several levels of underground mushroom tree farms. Use a pump stack from the cavern lake, build/carve a big, walled-in platform to act as your farm, and flood it. Once it drains, it'll start growing 'shrooms by the wagonload. Repeat until you have all the trees you ever need.

You'll get lots of wood from the caravans if you don't have many logs when they arrive.  This includes logs used directly to build things and axles, waterwheels etc. so if you've built a lot of those, forbid them.

As for magma, you'll probably want to smelt near to the magma sea, rather than build hundreds of pumps just to get the magma up to surface level.

The Protoss race in Starcraft if I'm not mistaken.

I thought so. First thing that came to mind was Starcraft and Dawn of War. I thought it was one or the other.

Why did you think of Dawn of War if you didn't hear WAAAAAAAAAGH?

<BURN THE HERETIC image macro>

IDK why I thought of Dawn of War either. . . . .

dolomite

Mine out your dolomite layers. Dolomite, as all sedimentary layers, can contain Lingite and bituminous coal which can be turned into fuel at a smelter (each use 1 unit of fuel to smelt, coal becomes 3 units of fuel and lingite 2 units, giving a net gain of 2 and 1 if you're using a conventional smelter). Magma makes things more convenient, but unless you planned ahead and embarked on a volcano, it's a lot easier to just use coal to fuel things. Dig out a bunch, quantum-stockpile it by your forges, set one or two to constantly make it into fuel.

A man would see that as a difficult challenge.
An elf would see that and despair.
A dwarf would see that and say, "Bring it on."

You could always dig out 5-10 layers completely and flood them and grow your own trees.

Imagine the elf love.

Heh, by elf love, I meant they'd hate you for the wholesale farming of trees in large quantities :)

You'll still need coal/coke for pig iron and steel, so request it like mad from the caravans.

Easier to request wood like mad and turn it into charcoal yourself, as coke is heavier in general and sometimes the caravans are *idiots* and bring coke blocks.

For steel industry powerful ensure magma presence. Accept substitute no.

I request coke, charcoal, and wood. And tons of steel, iron, and pig iron trinkets (if pig iron is a trinket-able material)

That's what cages and minecart shotguns are for!  We don't need to control them.  We just need to aim them.

I have heard of maps where it was 150 z-levels below. Just dig down to the very very bottom of the map and you will encounter it, unless you did some really specific worldgen change to say "no magma sea".
