Relative to other materials.

I assume it would matter what kind of rock they are made from...(you can make raw cotton candy short swords btw.)

That's what cages and minecart shotguns are for!  We don't need to control them.  We just need to aim them.

I mean the obsidian shortswords... the kind you can make at a craftsdwarf's warkshop.

I know, but you can use raw cotton candy (before the cotton candy strands have been extracted) to make knapped short swords supposedly...(the raws would seem to suggest that this is the case) but they would be about 1/20 as sharp as obsidian swords.  Obsidian swords are supposed to be 1/5 as sharp as refined cotton candy blades.  And 2x as sharp as iron blades.

when you look only at [MAX_EDGE:xxx] Yeah.  But other factors play in which makes them inferior to steel (or most metals IIRC)

Any other metals that could be good to make into rock short swards.  Specially if i decide to do a play with NO smelting :D (primitive dwarfs i call it).

Can't. Only obsidian, and posibly the blue stuff though I've never tried it, can be made into rock swords. You could mod ores, I think, but I'm not sure how(I think forking with the [MAXEDGE] tag might work).

... Yes, the hugs are for everyone.  No stabbing, though.  Just hugs.

Many stones should be usable...namely flint or chert.

Shear strength, Compressive strength, Hardness, Impact strength, Torsion strength, tensile strength, and density.  (tell me if I forgot one...)

Basically, obsidian is crazy sharp (sharper than steel blades) and it will cut through flesh like a hot knife through butter ( i have experienced an obsidian cut its weird being cut by something that cuts so well it isnt felt.)  However, if you aren't careful you can very easily chip off a piece of the cutting edge which may dull the edge (it could just mess up the shape of the cutting implement.  depends on how it broke.)  So, obsidian=sharp but brittle and relatively weak.  It is good at cutting through soft things but you dont want to use it for things where there is much need for a sturdy structure (i.e. against any kind of armor.)

The fact that it does not have given values for those qualities implies that either they aren't important (doubt it) or that since they are missing, it must factor into why obsidian swords are little better than wood atm.

Do any of those things matter for calculating damage in DF?
Man, I might have to run some tests. Steel swords vs obsidian swords with both no armor and full steel armor, or something.

It would seem that they have an effect on damage as the differences in some of these values explain why bronze armor is not very good.

Huh.

You, uh....

You can't have rock short swords in the arena.

Well, darn.

Last I knew there was some sort of bug that made rock short swords use the stats of the wood their hilts are made of for all their combat stats, instead of the obsidian. I do know that Iron is marginally better than rock swords, and Steel is pretty much ungodly awesome. And of course the spoiler ones; not that it's a great use of it.
