Last I knew there was some sort of bug that made rock short swords use the stats of the wood their hilts are made of for all their combat stats, instead of the obsidian. I do know that Iron is marginally better than rock swords, and Steel is pretty much ungodly awesome. And of course the spoiler ones; not that it's a great use of it.
The bug was fixed so now they actually use obsidian values, but there is a problem with obsidian values so they are not very good weapons :/

That's what cages and minecart shotguns are for!  We don't need to control them.  We just need to aim them.

No weight behind the blade. This is what causes them to suck if someone is wearing even a little bit of armour.

I agree with Urist. Steampunk is like Darth Vader winning Holland's Next Top Model. It would be awesome but not something I'd like in this game.
Unfortunately dying involves the amputation of the entire body from the dwarf.

Reading the title of this thread, I got "How good are rock shorts now?"
Um...Still heavier than their cotton counterparts?

^This, with the bug fixed.
Unless you want to cheat and give obsidian the density of, say, silver.

Rock short swords rock.
But mostly in weapon traps. Or against animals.

Embarked on a haunted volcano. I am currently terrorized by skeletal alligators.

Bahahhaha...yeah.  Basically, obsidian swords should shred anything not wearing metal armor.  Weapon traps loaded with them throughout choke points in your fortress will help with berserk dwarves.

Oh, that;s a REALLY good idea.  Plus, most thieves and baby snatchers are unarmored, so far as I can tell.

It will take care of many goblin thieves.  Kobold thieves need war animals to stop them.  (use elephants or bears for best results)

"Cotton"?! What's that? Unless you mean "cotton candy", then yes, it's heavier.

I've actually had quite a measure of success with obsidian danger rooms. The swords are so weak against armoured dwarves that you can reliably not lose a dwarf to them for years. I first tried this because it used up the copious quantities of obsidian I have from mining.
