specifically, how is it supposed to act? i was just digging out the upper level of an adamantine vein and i bumbled into the tunnel that descends to hell. this has never actually happened to me before. before i always had to channel near the bottom of the magma sea (nearly everything being semi-molten rock) to unleash hell. is this unusual? or have i just been extraordinarily lucky so far?

note: my 80 dwarf fortress pretty much died instantly, which sucks because my parent civ was at war with the elves, and i was looking forward to more skirmishes with them. my military was composed of proficient axedwarves in iron armor, so the fight didn't go so well.

There have been many reports of people mining a single block of adamantine and it opening a path to Hell. There was a 'safe mining' zones in a previous topic, ends up being a dangerous game of minesweeper.

And yes, it is fairly common for a Adamantine vein to lead to the HFS.

I take a legendary mason and make them a miner as well as setting adamantine to non-economic.  I have them dig the initial shaft, until I find the hole, and then have them wall it up quickly.  Usually it works.
