A thief has stolen a Steel Helm!
« on: December 06, 2010, 08:27:47 am »

Except it's Summer, first year. I haven't met my first caravan yet and I never packed anything Steel when I embarked.

So where the hell did the thief find that?

It isn't a new Dwarf Fortress version until we're made to fear some kind of regular creature.  Carp, Elephants, Unicorns, Badgers, and now Mosquitos.  I've got 5 dorfBucks on the next one being plagues of groundhogs.

When something gets taken by a raccoon or other stealing animal, does it get reported this way? Or does it say "A raccoon [or whatever] has stolen blah-de-blah?" I can't remember.

It says raccoon, they keep grabbing all the junk at the edge of my map from the elves that keep getting murdered by goblins.

If you've got death items set to auto-forbid, can they still be stolen? The perimeter of my map is littered with forbidden goblin stuff, and my understanding is that if kobolds are able to get away clean a few times, they'll up their aggressiveness, making for more fun.

EDIT: Just answered my own question! I was playing along idly, when I saw: "A thief has stolen a ({«*silver halberd*»})!"

So yes, forbidden stuff can be nicked. Sweet.

if they're not a dwarf, they don't give a lick about what you've forbidden or not.

While adding magma to anything will make it dwarfy, adding the word "magma" to your post does not necessarily make it funny.

It's rather annoying when your hunter grabs several stacks of Masterwork bolts, leaves a few littered around the landscape, and you find that your crafter is now enraged when a thief steals them.

If he's only made a single masterwork he'll get very upset. If he's churning out masterworks by the bin load he won't really care.

I have my weaponsmiths practice on first making ammo, and then making the weapons. Its very easy to produce 10,000 iron bolts, and they will last a long time before being depleted. Also, after a siege, I unforbid all ammo so they recover the lose bolts laying around.

I thought loose bolts wouldn't re-stack and there fore when a dwarf picks them up for duty he'll only have 1 bolt. Has this changed?

No, but I've seen dwarves pick up several stacks of bolts to make up a required minimum, so they may just use 40x1 bolt, instead of 1x40 bolts.

I agree with Urist. Steampunk is like Darth Vader winning Holland's Next Top Model. It would be awesome but not something I'd like in this game.
Unfortunately dying involves the amputation of the entire body from the dwarf.

I just order all metal bolts to be melted down then unforbid them.  This results in a possible gain of material.  Very useful when making bronze or steel bolts.

This is a useful feature..and this is DF.. so im gonna assume its bugged
That's what cages and minecart shotguns are for!  We don't need to control them.  We just need to aim them.

I can't be bothered with all this melting malarky, so everything gets dumped when I'm done with it. Down into the magma pit with you, loincloth #435

I melt down all dwarfy (metal) items and incinerate all elfy (not metal) items.  Stealing from the elves is annoying because it wastes so much time burning their crap.  Also, making a ton of coins as training for furnace operators?  Bad idea.  Lags (one minting order is like mining out 500 stone.  ugh.)
