I feel that exploiting diagonal access is kind of exploity.
There's nothing "exploity" about it. I don't know how you came to that conclusion.

I go with 3x3 rooms, however I also built vertically. I'll build a large apartment complex that can house some 50+ dwarves on each floor, and it extends as far up as I can be bothered to dig.

For the overflow I use beds scattered around the fortress, so the homeless always have a sleeping spot even if its not ideal.

One of the spearcatchers catches a spear? Looks like the apartment complex has a vacancy!  :o

Its just my opinion. I might be a little weird and OCD, but I like items to be accessible from one of the cardinals, not diagonal. Its just my preference.

The 'exploity' feel comes from the thought of how a dwarf fits through what should be a null space. The corners of two diagonal rock wall cubes are touching!

Obviously, we must create a new, non-euclidean geometry in which tessellated squares' corners do not touch.

The squares touch at the corner point. Get a knife and bisect the point.

Why I make small rooms?

Well ... it takes time! I put windows and furniture and smooth and engrave the rooms.. if I spent all my time making rooms then the dwarves wouldn't have time to build defenses or train or produce food.

Once all that stuff is up and running I think it's fun to make increasingly elaborate and spacy rooms of all kinds. Like a 5 z-level tall great dining room with balconies on every level where the personal dining rooms are located.

Because otherwise they are too good for ordinary dwarves and the nobles get depressed.
Also, pathfinding.

You really don't need to make rooms, except for a room for the baron and monarch.

Everyone else can go sleep in the barracks room hidden next to the magma pumps, and they won't complain too much. I'm usually quite slow when it comes to building proper rooms for the common dwarves. I only do that once the security, food, industrial, and royal quarters are all finished.

I just finished digging out a new wing of 2x2 rooms, smoothing, engraving, making all the furniture, moving it in......
No way in hell I'm giving Urist McPeasant anything bigger.

Hey, at least all we have to do now with the common dwarf is make it a room; they will automatically assign themselves a room the next time they need sleep; married even double up in 1 room.  You only have to assign nobles there rooms.  THIS TAKES LOADS OF TIME OFF :D compared to 28d40

I make 3x1 rooms because of more interesting designs. With 3x3 I can only make rows or them or try to make a giant z level occupying circles shape that will take three years to mine out. I can't create exponentially more work for my miners so I don't want to commit a lot of dwarves to it. Either way by the time I have things mined out it's not a good time for shunting a lot of miners into the military- I either have a functional one or it is too late.

The only dwarves in my forts that get rooms are nobles that get pissy if they dont have them.  The rest of the dwarves sleep in the dorm across the hallway from the dining room.  Dwarves really do not need individual rooms, they may get a bad thought, but once they hang out with their buddies/drink some awesome booze/eat a masterful dwarven syrup roast, they dont really care about the fact that they do not have their own rooms.  The only drawback for me so far is that they leave discarded clothing lying all over the place, but it is just a simple matter of hiding the items and they are soon forgotten.

2. Just make a up stairs or ramp directly next to it and you won't have to worry about swimming skills.
Do dwarves have enough sense now to head for a way out of the water instead of flailing around in a statistically improbable manner until they drown? If not, adding fortifications so that the only other place to go is the ramp or stair would be an adequate safety measure.

OP:
Trees might be a problem, since you'll probably be using plumbing tunnels one tile wide. I don't know if smoothing or building a floor will stop trees from growing, but making the plumbing out of up stairs certainly will.

You don't need to worry about well parties if no room is designated. But do make sure you know about the quirks of water pressure before you start even the designating stage.

I am trying to make chickens lay bees as eggs. So far it only produces a single "Tame Small Creature" when a hen lays bees.
Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

I wondered about some public works like this once, then I realized: This is DF! Make them haul all that water in buckets! I Use 3x1 rooms smoothed. Average: 100db so most can afford them. The rest sleep on the floor and provide extra hazards for the military to spar around.

a large room means that urist mcsoapmaker will most likely decide to sleep in the hospital rather than walk to his legendary quality room.
