Are medic dwarves just twisted?
« on: December 06, 2010, 04:32:45 am »

Ok, I got an injured dwarf, in bed, thirsty. I have 2 medic dwarfs and a chief medical dwarf, and with no jobs other then medical related on, they do nothing. Idle with no job. This guy saved you from invading kobolds, least you could do is give him a drink before he gets near death... they seem to get to him before he dehydrates to death, sure, but daaaaaamn, they got a bad/twisted sense of humor or something. give the poor guy a drink, I mean i got idle dwarves and everyone has feed/water injured on, and no one's getting one of the 4 buckets just 3 squares away, to the water source another 3 squares away. anyone got docs who jump right on them when they see a blue arrow pop up?

honestly, that was a ragequit moment.  The friggin thief just walked on past and grabbed it.  There were like 100+ floors yet to be placed.
My computer struggled to load all the demons.  Then, next frame, I check the unit list....
The last.... 4+ pages.... all demons.

For the first 10 years, I had a pretty normal hospital death rate for a Dwarf Fortress game. However, none of the dead patients had died of blood loss, infection, suffocation, syndrome, "infortunate accidents", or even hunger.
Nope, they absolutely all died of thirst.
It got magically better from the moment someone managed to break the cursed chain and die of an infection while resting. Then, the patients started getting water much, much more regularly.
So yeah. The medics are very twisted. That, or they feel so bad for their patients having to go sober they'd rather end their suffering as fast as possible.

you may have actually chosen medics who dislike helping other people.  When someone carries food or water to an injured person then the wounded guy gets a happy thought 'recived xxx recently'

The guy carrying it can also gain a thought, but depending on their personality this can be positive or negative.  I usually make sure my medical crew are all of the 'helpful' type.

I dont know if this affects how soon they will help him out, but it certainly keeps em happy as they enjoy caring for people

>_> greeeeeat, I just nearly finished finetuning my jobspreads too. bet i got the ones who hate everything as my medic.

edit: Oh dear Armok...
One is nervous and quick to anger, but active, modest and confident under pressure.
The other one has a helplfulness score of 1 according to DF therapist... basically he'll avoid helping people whenever he can. he also is a thrill seeker, and procrastinates. at least he can handle the stress and is organized.
Annnnd my Chief medical dwarf, while not a risk taker, and genuinely likes people, is quick to anger and cautious. but not a risk taker. great, I got 2 nearly sane but really angry dwarves and one who doesn't give a smeg but wants to do a new surgery that involves replacing key parts with adamantine. I'm keeping them in charge :3

I mean they do get to them before they die so thats a plus... heh a thrill seeker and 2 rage dwarves.

Shit, now I have the mental image of a diagnostician taking a look at a dwarf infected by a random Forgotten Beast's noxious extract.
... not for very long.
"He's blind, but he was still able to find the way to the hospital, he vomits, and his lungs are going numb. So what? I don't get why you always want a diagnosis even though they're all doomed. Even a kitten can see it. He got sprayed by a monster's bodily fluids, that should be enough diagnosis. There, he has lupus. Happy? He's going to die. Like everyone else. I know it because I'm better than all of you, because I know how to use a goddamn crutch. Where the hell did you put the sunshine?"

I put a well in the hospital :) haven't had any problems since!

In my case they refuse to give drinks to prisoners.  :-\ the only way to save one was to deconstruct the chain and let her go! .. i'm going to build a well in the prison too

Here's a better idea. Build the prison inside a giant well, or failing that, the sea.

They are not twisted. Just bugged. See ya in three month, maybe it will be fixed. Or not. It is unimportant, small part of game, after all.

(yes, that was sarcasm)

I made every Draconian friendly.
Seems like they LOVE giving water. In fact, they complain that they can't water the person.

.... Funnily enough, I've observed a dorf or two that's soooo helpful, they'll bring a bucket of water to someone as soon as he gets thirsty. Take it right to him ...

... while he's at the booze stockpile chugging some Dwarven beer ...
