Well, reading the thread about North Korea shelling the South, I stumbled upon the "No Motherland Without You" song. And it's terrible disco remix. So I started searching for more stuff about Best Korea, and became quite a fan: this country is so weird you cannot caricature it!

So this thread is for sharing weird stuff about North Korea (Weird stuff from the USSR, Turkmenistan and other totalitarian regimes accepted.)

If you want a glimpse into the particular North Korean brand of state-run crazy (or want more photoshoppable material of Kim Jong-Il and his flunkeys wearing the standard issue purple anorak), this site posts the daily newscast from KCTV. Apparently, all NK TV sets are hard-tuned to only receive this channel.

Watching a few clips you might think they do a lot of the newscasts in repeat. But no, it's just that the first 5 20 minutes seems to be done almost the same way each day. There's something that almost sounds like a chant about Kim Jong-Il, followed by an awkward and neverending slideshow of great leader inspecting a glass/clothes/soysauce/ramen factory in his purple coat, probably handing out advice to the management that boosts efficiency 250%. Then you can all join in the hymn to the glory of the worker's paradise. Drinking game: Have a shot every time they mention Kim Jong-Il.

It's all very sad really.

One of my hobbies is looking for odd stuff in NK on google earth. The first thing you'll probably notice when looking at the cities there is the almost complete absence of traffic. Or possibly the general fondness in east asia for blue roofs.

One of my favourites is this thing:

What's that, simply a road going through a mountain in a tunnel? No, it's not a road, it's an airfield runway. They've built a few of those around the country, usually near regular airfields. I guess the idea is that a subterranean runway is better protected, but a well-placed bomb would probably cause a cave-in and render it completely useless (whereas ordinary runways for fighter jets are easily repaired). And I'd hate to land at one of those places.

In downtown Pyongyang we have this monumental failure. It's the Ryugyong Hotel, a 105 story pyramid meant to impress visitors and citizens alike. Except they ran out of money so it's been standing there half finished for two decades. Look at the shadow for a sense of the scale. Also, there's already 2-3 other oversized hotels in town but only 1000 visitors per year.
