Not sure what you mean by "lack of fuel"- you have magma, you don't need fuel. Or do you just mean to make pig iron for steel?

You don't need water in case things go horribly wrong if you make sure things don't go horribly wrong.

Breaching new volcanoes is kinda tricky, cause they're vertical- no variations you can exploit. What I do is this: dig a large cistern right next to the volcano, with all mechanisms already in place. One level above the top of the cistern, have him channel out the wall of the magma tube- that way the magma falls straight into the cistern, letting your miner escape and giving your masons a chance to wall off the hallway he was standing in before it floods with magma.

Or you could just be a wimp and breach from the surface.

Getting marble isn't too difficult- just dig down a ways, you don't need that much of it. If you're worried about breaching cavern layers, you can *usually* get away with assigning most of your fortress to being masons, and walling off each cavern layer as soon as you enter into it (seven dwarves can build eight walls before most enemies can even reach them. Usually.)

There's actually a small obsidian perimeter around the volcano's first level of magma.

UPDATE: Well, I forgot to bring an axe for trees, and had to restart...

Also, I was dead wrong about the flux stone problem.  There's EXPOSED hematite AND marble on site.  And an absurd number of pools.

Well, you can either abandon and reclaim, or try to hold out till a caravan comes around.

You could have deconstructed the wagon then used it to build a carpenters workshop and a training axe.  This works just fine for chopping down trees.

That's what cages and minecart shotguns are for!  We don't need to control them.  We just need to aim them.

yeah...I ran out of wood before I realized what had happened, and wasn't in a position to wait for a caravan, or even prepare for one.

I hate when people use those silly names >:l
If he doesn't get it, it's not very good advice, and if he does, that was pointless.
Right here. I've recently begun using Clown in some threads because I find it amusing, but otherwise what the fuck? Are there people who legitimately don't know about these things anyway?

That wasn't technically a miscarriage, but the doctors didn't have a concise term for "gave birth and immediately baptized the baby in liquid fire."

Step 1:  Drain significant portion of volcano
Step 2:  Build fortress within drained portion
step 3: ???
step 4:  Profit

Or build a magma cannon.  (or better yet build a device that would flood your entire map with magma at a single lever pull.)

Maybe build the quarters of my nobles precariously perched over the lip of the volcano?
No, inside the volcano.  Then they just pull a lever and noble problem solved.  Rig up a draining system and you're golden!
The volcano refills itself.

But at least after all the chaos, the weather cleared.

I am aware of this.  It takes a while to refill though.  A draining system isnt too hard to create using a floor hatch to dump magma from the room into a second room with a raised drawbridge.  Atom smash the magma once it has drained from the nobles room.
