Magma and Lava in the Dwarfish Vocabulary
« on: December 05, 2010, 11:59:53 am »

this isn't much of a suggestion so much as pointing out a shortcoming.

there is NO word for Magma or Lava in the Dwarfish language apparently... i wanted to put either word into the name of a midget stronghold i was starting near a... *drum-roll* volcano and i found neither in the massive list of words i can use to name a midget stronghold anything from "oceantrumpet" to "boatmurdered" but apparently the dwarfish fear of that fiery red stuff so much they dare not even give it a name, let alone say the non-existent name...

i hate to be presuppositions but i"m sure this will be fixed next release. (it's not exactly the hardest thing to add...)

It's the same reason fish have no word for water.

Though you could substitute titthal, "Fun".

using "fun" would be good but I'm pretty sure dwarves don't LIVE in lava, in fact I'm pretty sure (certain to be exact) that dwarves DIE in lava.

get my point?

Or you could, y'know, add it to the language file yourself.

Indeed. I think of dwarves as being quite German, so the idea that they have a certain list of words and then add words to other words to come up with compound words makes sense. Vadia+1

I agree with Urist. Steampunk is like Darth Vader winning Holland's Next Top Model. It would be awesome but not something I'd like in this game.
Unfortunately dying involves the amputation of the entire body from the dwarf.

Or just the word for blood.

Perhaps "earth blood", "rock blood" or "mountain blood" ("ber nazush", "id nazush" and "onol nazush" respectively)?

I always thought magma was Armok's Blood as far as dwarves were concerned.

I was thinking the same thing, krall. Bernazush, "blood of the earth", seems like it would be an ideal name.

If you think of Dwarves as somewhat Nordic in addition to Germanic (and this may also be true in German, I'm not sure) you can look at the tradition of Kennings- basically allusions, sometimes stacked- and justify pretty much anything as a name for magma.  For example, if that civilizations worships a fire god or god of volcanos named Ziril Hotparch (as my current fortress does) you could name the Fortress The Blood of Hotparch.  Or kick it like Inception and Go Deeper.  Call it the Battle Sweat of the Mountain Thunderer.  (Battle sweat being an actual Norse kenning for blood.  Other options include Slaughter-dew and Wound-Sea.  Add as many layers as you like.
