I suggest putting a small quantity of magma into the tile, maybe 1/7 or 2/7, just to burn their legs.

Only 3 z levels? I've seen goblins routinedly survive falls of 7 or 8 z levels with their legs broken.
But have you seen goblin who fall 3 z-levels and was able to move?
Survivor who can't move is exactly what i need.
In case 3z-s appears too little, I'll move pit entrance one step up

Hmm, nice idea. But won't it burn dwarf who come to chop him? And there's problem with leaving the rest floor clean from magma...

Did you know that the Russian word for "sock" is "no sock"?
I just saw a guy with two broken legs push a minecart with a corpse in it. Yeah.

This just in, a woodcutter fell at least 3 z-levels but is still alive and can move, although painfully. Goblins mustn't be very different, so you should add some height or depth.

I don't mean to alarm you, but it appears that your Dwarves are all in fact elephants.

by the way, what about large enemies, like ogres or trolls? Do we need more depth for them?
!!SCIENCE!! needed!

Just drain or pump it out after you're done incapacitating the gobbo.

Or maybe we need less height.  More mass at the same acceleration will yield more force.  However, the strength of their bones does not ramp up proportionate to their size.  The larger something is the less efficient the structure of their bones are.  (Why elephants don't jump.)

That's what cages and minecart shotguns are for!  We don't need to control them.  We just need to aim them.

Also why insects are unlikely to die from falling even from relatively great heights.

IIRC ants cannot die no matter how far they fall.  Their weight:body structure strength ratio is just too low.

So, unless gravity magically increases, ants can be dropped from low orbit?

Supposedly.  This also assumes that they do not suffocate or get blown into water on their way down.

Warning SCIENCE content:

I tested falling dwarves in arena mode [31.18] and got interesting results. On impact, the ground generates a semi-random number of blunt attacks (2-9) against random body parts. Most clothing doesn't appear to protect against this damage. The damage usually breaks bones in the area, or heavily bruises tissue (turning organs cyan). More attacks appear to be generated when you fall from a greater height.

On average, 20% of fallers die of brain damage on impact, and 15% die of suffocation due to upper/middle spine fracture. 35% average death rate for heights between 2z and 8z. 1z falls suffer no injury. I couldn't test more than 8z in the arena. You'd need a fort to test greater heights.

A dwarf can fall 2z, land on his head, and die. A dwarf can also fall 8z and live, though all survivors have broken bones and are unconscious from the pain.

Odd stuff:
-only breastplates and greaves appear to deflect the damage
-helms do nothing to protect against brain damage from falls
-each "ground attack" trains armor user and dodger skill
-armor user and dodger skills don't reduce/avoid damage
-heavy animals don't suffer more than light animals
-hard materials like teeth, tusks, and bronze are often severed
-creatures with many body parts fare better than ones with few body parts
-GCS are boneless, painless, have many spare legs, making excellent drop troops

Or, you know, burn up in the atmosphere.  There still is plenty of friction.

Unless you started the ant's free-fall far enough away that it was moving significantly faster than its velocity at equilibrium (maximum normal velocity in the atmosphere) it shouldn't be burning up.

I take it back, I thought low orbit to mean outside the atmosphere.
