Questions to !!SCIENTISTS!!, Military dpt
« on: December 05, 2010, 06:29:27 am »

1) For example, we have a pit. If it's 1 unit depth, goblin dropped there will be just stunned, but unharmed. If it's 10 units - we get flat and wide spreaded goblin mess. But how deep it should be for just breaking his leg but leaving him alive and immovable? 3, 4 units?

2) We have goblin standing still and axedwarf chopping his limbs out. How far they can fly away? What weapon is better for chopping goblin to flying pieces - swords or axes? Would serrated disc slice their limbs further?

I just saw a guy with two broken legs push a minecart with a corpse in it. Yeah.

3 z-levels tends to kill them sometimes, but 2-z levels might not be enough. So pick one.

Hm. maybe a set of wooden spikes at landing point could help immobilize that green bastard.

Or you could have several Z-levels below that with bridges that you can open in case it wasn't enough.

I want to make some Dwarven Golf hall, and there i need goblin with broken leg standing at the center of field and dwarf that chops his head off. Field has concentric circle marks, so we can measure how far his head lands. So bridges aren't the case...

On secons thought, who cares about accident kills? we can just drop next goblin there

So, 2-nd question, has someone seen limb flying further than 10 tiles?

Pretty sure in a 40d fort I had an execution tower which caused limbs to explode vertically 15z levels, don't think they traveled more than 10 horizontally in total though.

body parts seem to rain much further vertically, its almost like they ignore the vertical z-movement.  For instance my serrated disks at the entrance normally throw bits 3-4 tiles.  Its not uncommon however for me to find a part 2 tiles away horizontaly, but then 10+ vertically (on top of a wall)

I wish I had something cool to say about this.  Because it's really cool.

Bits of goblins on my carefully instructed walls irritate me. Either I leave it there, ruining the aesthetics of my fort, or I have to build ramps to get to it.

I agree with Urist. Steampunk is like Darth Vader winning Holland's Next Top Model. It would be awesome but not something I'd like in this game.
Unfortunately dying involves the amputation of the entire body from the dwarf.

Use a pressure plate just before a long retracting bridge connected to somewhere goblins want to path, and a two-level fall taking them back to where they started. If they break their legs, great. If they don't, they get another go.

I am trying to make chickens lay bees as eggs. So far it only produces a single "Tame Small Creature" when a hen lays bees.
Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

From my last .18 fort, dropping them down 2 z-levels into a trade depot resulted in many being stunned upon impact.  However, I was dropping in goblins by the dozens, so I wasn't really scientific about it, neither did I check to see if they had broken limbs, because caravan guards were slaughtering them.

Well. I do this sort of thing alot with my "blenders", two Z levels is enough to simply wound, not usually lethal but possible, from then on the more units the more chance of fatality until eventually it's instant death.

Limbs can fly incredibly far. And axes are best for it. A good steel battle axe can chop a Giant Cave Spider to a slurry of ichor with limbs everywhere in all directions ( Assuming you're good enough to kill one. )

Swords are messy too. Just not as messy.

stack of 10 prepared dragonfly brains - I'm trying to imagine what's more funny: a dwarf popping a tiny dragonfly brain into his mouth for a snack, the butcher who actually prepared this feast, or the brave hunter who ventured out into the wilderness and returned with this bounty.

Thanks. So I'll stick to axes and 3 z-levels.

Only 3 z levels? I've seen goblins routinedly survive falls of 7 or 8 z levels with their legs broken.

I made a 92 Z-level drop into the magma sea once, and I even walled it off from the caverns.  I don't picture much living through that though.
