3-Д rendering gameplay?
« on: December 04, 2010, 11:53:54 pm »

I know there are many programs out there that let you view your fortress in GLORIOUS 3-D, but are there any that let you do that while you play??? My friend likes dwarf fortress somewhat but said he just could'nt get over the graphics dillema (spelled wrong of course.) yes, I know, the ASCII graphics are pretty, but he doesn't get that.

Stonesense might allow you to play and watch in 3-D, because it reloads the image constantly. At least, that's my experience with it.

Correct. I don't believe there's a proper 3-D visualiser that does the same, primarily because attempting to re-render the state of the fortress in or near real time would be a catastrophically stupid way to kill your processing speed.

oh don't worry, he has processing speed to catastrophically and stupidly waste. so I should tell him to get stonesense and make his move, proccedding to watch it on stonesense?

Visualizers have to poke through the process memory, as well, so having a masterwork processor does not necessarily ensure obscenely high visualizer performance. Certainly helps, though.

If the ASCII is the problem, he could always try a tileset.

DF doesn't go much past one core, if you've got two or four or more cores a visualizer isn't going to slow it down at all.

I always though stonesense was a sort of slow visualizer that you can't really play the game through.

DF doesn't go much past one core, if you've got two or four or more cores a visualizer isn't going to slow it down much.

Heard from somewhere DF performance relies a lot on RAM? I have programs to monitor my CPU usage and I see pretty even distribution on all 4 cores. Or maybe my back ground programs make it seem that way.

Stonesense doesn't take much time to refresh. You can set it to automatically refresh - by default every .2 seconds, last I checked - and even have the Stonesense view follow your in-game cursor.

So while you can't "play" DF through Stonesense, you can certainly see DF through it with no real problems.

I can attest to that. I'm currently running DF on a laptop with 1.2 GHz processor and 4 GB of RAM. I tried moving to an old desktop with a better processor (can't remember exactly, it was at least double that number), but much less RAM, and the game wasn't even able to load. It makes sense, the bulk of the resource draw for this game is keeping track of everything, which is what the memory is for.

A man would see that as a difficult challenge.
An elf would see that and despair.
A dwarf would see that and say, "Bring it on."

not handling the ascii is one thing.  Trying to play it in 3d is just silly.

Stonesense can keep track of things in real time. I also advice him to get a tileset (mayday is good).
