Combination hospital + DWR construction
« on: December 04, 2010, 10:17:08 pm »

I've got a new fort near an active volcano, and I'm getting to the point where I would like to try setting up a danger room. This is new to me, having mostly trained the slow boring way in the past, but from what I've read, this means I will need a hospital, which means I will need clean water, which (because I seem to be in an area with only saltwater) means some power for pumps will be nice. Of course I can set up a windmill for power, but I'd like to get some dwarven water reactors running as well. After reading peregarrett's sanitarium idea, the thought occurred to me to steal part of this design and attempt a combination hospital/triple-reactor, pumping in water from a (salty?) rainwaterwater cistern I have already built around one of the largest natural lakes.

Code: [Select]
z=0, Hospital zone
WWWWWWWWWWW
W#########W
W#.#.#.#.#W
W#8#8#8#8#W - beds surrounded with grates with space for traction/table as needed
W#########W
OWWWWWWWWWO - Wells dropping to water on z=-2

z=-1, Reactor and disposal area level 1
=+=+=+=+=+=
=^=*=^=*=^= - power output
=|= =|= =|=
  S S S S    - supports linked to levers for "terminal" cases

O         O

z=-2, Reactor and disposal area level 2
 W W W W W
 W W W W W
 * W * W *
W WWW WWW W
 W   W   W
O         O

It seems to me that this might work, but I don't have a lot of experience with the reactors. I'd like to get all this done in one shot, not having a ton of water to work with. From what I've read, it's much harder to get linked reactors going, hence the gears vs a solid axle. Also, to keep the water from being salty I think I need to surround the entirity of levels z=-1,-2 with constructed walls/floors? Another question, assuming the basic premise is good... will this drop kill dwarfs dead, or do I need to drop them into water? Is the water in a reactor (3 or 4/7 optimally from my research, possibly less with the added space) going to be enough to drown a dwarf anyway? My experience says no. Maybe add a few Z levels for a drop chute?

The other idea I had was to add a mist generator on top of the hospital for cleaning, but I'm still working on how to get that in place without totally redesigning the rest.

Edit: Hmmm... that extra space is going to come crashing right down on my water wheel, isn't it? That's a bit of a pain...
