My best guess is that he's talking about killing the nobles, kings or queens, leaving you with ~30 pieces, but even at that, it's horrible.

573: Your other main goal in chess is to kill the Queen too.

It's a reference to stockpile references.
You know, before you set that up, it gives you a ballpark estimate?

I'm not sure why the chessboard reference is necessary, though...
