......Gods be damned! I had hoped only to tame them a little, still stealing stuff and causeing trouble, but not enough to anger the villagers.

You can release that change and keep trying. You are quite new at all this, so some failure or inadvertent change is to be expected.

Also I am amused that you called on the gods to damn it.

I say gods be damned quite often, even in RL. It sounds better than 'god damn it'.

So, are my cute little tribesmen storing that hammer in the shrine and if so, will it boost the effect of the aforementioned shrine?

Quite likely, people are more likely to pray at a 'holy object' supposedly made by a god than they are a shine built by men.

Yes, no. ^^

Just because they've declared it a relic doesn't mean it does anything. They could decide a tree is sacred too but that doesn't help. The shrine will add to the amount of power you gain from their belief, but a rock and a stick will not.

Mostly it is the act of building the shrine, with the ritual and prayer and proper religious rites that go into it, that make it a focus for power.

Consider... you arrive at the shrine and they point to a mossy rock with a stick stuck to it and say "This was made by god!"

You're going to think, "Why would god make a crappy stick jammed into a rock?"

At least the spear was hovering and stood upright without support, and it was crafted from nothing by divine power.

FYI there is no upper limit to how much power you can store.
