As far as food, the system is abstract. One or two token in Ample terrain can easily support itself with enough food. The token represents the 100 people who are able to work, the rest of the tribe is gathering food and doing the other things necessary for survival.

You only have to worry about food if you overpopulate a tile, as then your people could starve or could damage the environment.

Don't worry it will have an effect, though not a profound one. Basically it gives them an edge if they are starving or overpopulating on a coastal tile and an alternate food source if another god curses them and kills the animals in the area or something.

You should have gone for something like a hammer, to hopefully make that your holy simble. It would fit an architect more than a fish would.

No rush. They have no concept of what a machine is right now, but you can call them that. Machine People?

That would have been much harder to make, but had you done so it would have been much less likely they would have thrown it out.

As it is, there is a god-crafted spear stuck in the sand on the beach. Who knows what shenanigans it will get up to later on when we have heroes.

The holy symbol is what the people associate with you. You can change it through interaction with them, either indirect or direct.

Heck if you want to, you can just appear and say "MY SYMBOL IS NOT A FISH!" though you may just scare them. Remember, they are very simple savages right now...savages who can fish.
