Make items out of bismuth?
« on: December 04, 2010, 05:35:04 pm »

I got a mandate to make three bismuth items, and I have six bismuth bars, but it seems there's nothing I can make with them except bismuth bronze. How do you satisfy a request for bismuth items?

You make bismuth bars from bismuthinite ore. Only way to do it. You might also be able to do it by melting bismuth bars, too, as you will "make" bismuth bars from that, too, but with loss of bismuth.

That noble might shortly encounter an unfortunate accident.

"Before you have an unfortunate accident resulting from a mandate to make bismuth items, note that such a mandate can be fulfilled by smelting bismuthinite into bismuth bars, which technically count as 'items'."

Huh, I never noticed that.

So it looks like the only solution is to acquire bismuthinite. Well this mandate is gonna have to fail; it'll be a couple years before I can get the dwarven caravan to start delivering bismuthinite.

Dwarven politics do not allow for a mandate to fail, but they do allow for specially fitted nobles quarters.

Can you not stud things with bismuth? Will that not count?

No, nor does making bismuth bronze.  It doesn't matter if you do something that uses bismuth as an ingredient, you have to do something that results in an item made of bismuth.  So smelting bismuthinite is the only answer.  This is why I never smelt bismuthinite when I find it, but instead store it in case of bismuth item mandates.

I think that's right, yeah.

This is a good reason to always request bismuthinite from your dwarven liaison and then smelt it only when you need to (producing bismuth bars).  This is also a good reason to keep a suicide booth on hand for crazy nobles who decide to like ridiculous things.

You could have berries on the rocks and the dwarves would say it was "berry gneiss."
You should die horribly for this. And I mean that in the nicest possible way.

If you have granite somewhere in your map, you could always go exploratory mining in the desperate hope of finding some.
