How much history do you generate?
« on: December 03, 2010, 02:08:28 pm »

Topic says it all really, I'm curious.  Do most people wait the standard 1050, do they stop earlier, go longer (if you can, never tried)? Are there major pros and cons (aside from more/fewer megabeasts and more/fewer civilizations) to doing so?

Fewer established settlements, fewer trade goods, less history to engrave, smaller sieges...I suppose.

I'm actually quite nice IRL, but you people have to pay the price for that.

I have recently started a fortress as early as possible, because I am sick and tired of my dwarves engrave humans and elves tameing animals.
I would like some history tough, but my dwarves are ofcourse completely oblivious of their own great deeds.

I find that if I go to 1050, entire races tend to die out. No elves and/or no goblins a lot of the time. I aim much lower, about a hundred years.

All the history.  EVERY. LAST. DROP.
but really I stop the history at 200-400 to insure that as few of the civs die out as possible, as was a problem a while back.  I don't know if it's still a problem, but I've just sort of stuck with it.

I usually do 500-600 years.  When running 1050 years I usually have a race wiped out or most of the world is covered in human sprawl.

I get too impatient to wait 1050 years. Typically I stopped at between 250-350 years, but faster worldgen with the latest versions have me waiting longer. My latest fort was founded in 777.

I like to have wolrd gen end at the year 999, purely so the first year of my fort is the year 1000.

I like having the history and bigger civs that results from this, of course, but the real reason is "round numbers are cool".

Round numbers are boring. Powers of two is where it's at. I like to start in year 128.

It varies for me. Most of the time I let it go to the default, but if my game's being slow for some reason, I'll end it early just because I'm impatient. I think my most recent fort is starting in year 208 as a result of this.

A man would see that as a difficult challenge.
An elf would see that and despair.
A dwarf would see that and say, "Bring it on."

200 to 300

Long enough to age-murder the world's first dorfs. Also, beyond that amount the world stops significantly developing and starts dying.

I usually go with 200-500 years, mainly in an attempt to stop the goblins from being wiped out. In 31.12 I had so many worlds without goblins, it was depressing. A shorter history did not really seem to help, but ... eh. It makes worldgen go faster, and reduces the odds of my artistically inclined dwarves to refer to events I don't care about, rather than my militia kicking butt.

@Footjob, you can microwave most grains I've tried pretty easily through the microwave, even if they aren't packaged for it.
