Well, it would punt out an awful lot of multinational corporations, and wreck a lot of ones that decided to stay here, forcing them to rebuild from somewhere close to the ground up.  You know how sometimes you see stories about how China is writing their own operating system, just so they can have a completely Chinese product from a completely Chinese company?  Yeah, that's the kind of thing that makes them look like a superpower-to-be.  It's VERY PAINFUL for them right now.  But they are creating a strong industrial base that they control, and can exploit worldwide in the decades to come.

Nobody in America... not even the work-less and homeless... want to work for the wages that the American public would demand of those factories so building them would be pointless because none of the items made would sell.

The only way America is going to be building their own stuff in the near future is if we make stuff without human labor and the unions already have a cow about that.

Which begs the question of how any factories at all still exist, since plenty do.  Or maybe we could realize that you have to spend more than 99 cents for a package of tube-socks.  Revive a little of Henry Ford's wisdom, that you'll sell a lot of product if you pay people enough to buy stuff.

Or let China have the low-skill manufacturing jobs and focus instead on high-skill manufacturing and R&D, where the US (currently) has an advantage.

They still exist because we got even poorer people with no other choice then to make those socks. But I got from your post you already got that somewhat.

Can only agree with you in the current situation... and/but I doubt it will ever change much. But one can hope we will start worrying about our species one day instead of citizens of X nation. Gonna take a few more major wars and global disasters though
