Well, you should probably tell McDonald's that their marketing to kids strategy doesn't work.

The goal is to make them biased towards smoking so they will start smoking later on in life.

But let's take a clearer example then: advertising McDonald's and Coca Cola in kindergartens.

I'd support legalizing it, but only because people are going to make more money selling it if its legal than illegal. Cigarettes on the other hand, should definitely be made illegal, seeing as people seem to be too stupid to not use them. Sadly, that will never happen because the tobacco industry has fingers everywhere in government :(

Sorry, thought this was just a thread about cannibals being accepted into society. I have nothing to add to whatever the topic at hand is.

Not really sarcasm so much as "go and look at that".

The issue isn't that advertisement doesn't work but that people are bombarded by it so often lately that we have become desensitized. It is why Advertisements were almost godly when they first started to take their modern form. Not that it doesn't sometimes have a dramatic effect from time to time, it just isn't going to change the political climate of America from leaning socialist to diehard capitalist anymore (though it may have never done so).

The Advertisement that companies prefer in schools is that their products make an appearance. Mc.Donalds was given in my Elementary school and Vending machines were put into my highschool.

As for why Tabacco isn't illegal... It is that they could NEVER do it. Alcohol was disasterous enough. They didn't lift the Alcohol ban because Alcohol was any better then what it was before the ban.

You are supposed to be desensitized. The theory is that you experience several thousand advertisements per day, and they start to sink into the way you look at the world. Therefore, McDonald's will start to be a positive place instead of a place where the food and service is bad.

I think that they COULD ban tobacco, if they really wanted to. Tobacco is becoming less and less of a social norm. Prohibition on alcohol was a disaster because alcohol has been a staple of our culture for thousands of years.

Prohibition on alcohol was a disaster because alcohol has been a staple of every culture since civilization began.
Fixed. In any case, we must not under any circumstances ban tobacco. That's a step backwards, because it just gives criminals somthing to replace pot with. I don't care how much you love this idea of a pot-only country where everyone uses hemp for everything, in order to get results, we must have blanket drug legalization. There is no other working option.

True dat.

It should, however, be illegal to smoke in public. Forcing others to inhale your smoke is meh.

Besides that, banning tobacco would turn a large percentage of our population into criminals for no real reason.

I just quit smoking and I seriously doubt prohibition would get most people to.

It should, however, be illegal to smoke in public. Forcing others to inhale your smoke is meh.

It should be illegal to read in public. Reminding other people that they're functionally illiterate is meh.

More seriously, I'd like to not have to breath car exhaust, or see power lines. No smoking in buildings I can agree with, but in public at all?

Well I am just saying that the reason they don't ban Tabacco is because of some false understanding that it is better for you but rather because there is no way they could actually manage to ban it.

Which is why I think arguements based on the fact that it is better then Tabacco are weaker... because they would ban Tabacco too if people wouldn't charge washington and tear the President's head off... Well ok probably not that far, but it would be pretty bad. (Ok that and Tabacco, especially during its prime, had the most powerful spokes people available. Though that is only in America, they found excellent places where their presence is unquestionably powerful)
