To get them into smoking at the time when they're most impressionable?

And most watched by their parents? It would be far better to do that to a high school rather than a kindergarten, seeing as that age group actually smokes illegaly. Little kids wouldn't have the resources or privacy, nor would they be compelled to actually do it.

The goal is to make them biased towards smoking so they will start smoking later on in life.

But let's take a clearer example then: advertising McDonald's and Coca Cola in kindergartens.

With an ad?! Billboards aren't Manchurian Candidate brainwashing, some six-year old probably wouldn't even remember seeing it five miniutes after the fact.

I've never heard of those things being advertized inside kindergartens, and parents have total control over what their child eats in any case.

Extended exposure to such images and messages does in fact influence the human mind. Subconsciously, obviously, but nonetheless.

It's basic Pavlovian conditioning. Ads are not necessarily about directly convincing a possible customer to purchase the product in the near future, it is more often about making the customer remember the logo/brand/name in a long distance perspective. When it comes to situations such as these, it is simply about making the kid associate happy feelings (which they got from being in kindergarten) with their brand which is advertised in that environment. Thus they build loyalty to the brand/company, and is more likely to start using their products later on in life.
It is for exactly these reasons companies like McDonalds (for example) is so heavily marketed towards children.

Or as David Bazan put it: "All the experts say we ought to start them young; That way they'll naturally love the taste of corporate cum" :P

Also, there's our monkey-see-monkey-do instincts to consider.

I take it you don't have any kids, or at least never took one to a supermarket?

Being 16, I am very glad to not have any children. However, during my younger trips to the supermarket, my parents retained control of what they bought with their money, not me.

My parents don't love me because they didn't let me pick what food we bought? Are you sure you guys aren't the strange ones?

Pretty sure. I could always get at least a candy bar out of every trip to the supermarket.
