True dat.

It should, however, be illegal to smoke in public. Forcing others to inhale your smoke is meh.

If you are in an open street or park, then how are you forcing others to breathe in your smoke ? How is cigarette smoke more harmful to people than Car / Train fumes ?

Personally, I am in favour of banning tobacco, and legalising Weed. Tobacco has no positive side to it whatsoever. A very significant percentage of citizens choose to smoke weed and get differing benefits from it, with harming others in any way at all. Our drug laws are retarded and backward. Apart from keeping people awake at night, what harm are people who go out and take pills and dance all night in a muddy field ? Compared to our city centres becoming no-go areas for lots of people on weekend nights, due to alcohol.

Nobody can convincingly argue to me that our current drug laws are coherant and make sense. I love alcohol, and use it most weeks, but it is destructive and causes pain and suffering EVERY week in EVERY city of this nation. And yet certain substances which are more or less harmless are lumped in with the ones like coke, crack, speed, smack which are damaging to the individual users and thier immediate friends.

Some kids grow up with the message that all illegal drugs are bad mmkay, and they have to avoid them at all costs. Then when they grow up a bit and try some of the minor / more harless ones, they find out that their government has actually been lying to them all this time. Then they lost respect for the whole message, and decide to try the more harmful ones to find out more.

Intelligent drugs advice is what we need. Not stupid right wing fools who have never even tried a spliff telling us all that we will go to hell for this.

I have seen first hand the damage that 'hard' destrucitve drugs will do to a person, and have lost a few friends along the way to them. The people who I knew and are gone now, had cocaine, heroin and alcohol to blame for their deaths. And I know people who have been smoking weed every day and are now in their forties and fifties, and have decent full time jobs and familes and are doing very well for themselves. Telling kids that smoking a joint will lead to their downfall is an immature opinion, and we as a society need to grow up.

Well ignoring that they construct cars now adays to emit safer exhaust (at least if my info is correct) then they did in the not sooo distant past.

That has more to do with Unavoidable vs. Avoidable. You can get people to smoke somewhere where people who don't want to inhale smoke (as harsh as it is in winter). You can't get people to stop driving cars.

With drugs that have health effects that are unknown at the time, it's hard to say vs. legalization.

Some of my friends smoke cigarrates, pot and/or probably other things. I don't want to see them jailed for this, but I also don't like the health effects I can already it having on them. There's not much I can do now, but if anyone is thinking of trying, you know, basically anything? Don't do it. I go to the local rescue mission regularly and get to see the ill effects addiction has on people's entire lives.

Cannabis? Who knows. We know that it has some ill health effects, albeit not as harmful as a large portion of more popular drugs. Cell phones are legal, and not only do they consistently emit slightly harmful radiation, but also are the cause of fatal driving accidents. (yeah that's unrelated, but think about it, it's sort of similar -- we dont' even know the extent "cell phone radiation" is harmful yet) I don't think legalization or not is going to stop anybody that's already addicted. But I also don't want to see people hurting themselves.

The freedom to hurt yourself is an essential part of freedom in general.

Anyway, there are cities which banned cars in core areas. So yes, you can replace cars with public transport.

Yeah, my city centre is pedestrianised.  I mean, car users don't lose out that much because the city centre here was designed more for the odd horse and cart, not the huge numbers of cars that would be going through...

I'd really like to throw in the concept of banning nicotine placement in tobacco, but that would be some huge stepping stone toward banning caffeine and I'm not down with that.

They did actually have to ban Caffine in several products... because quite litterally a lot of beverage companies would absolutely LOVE to put caffine in just about anything.

By calling me retarded you have highlighted the stupid for all to see.

My point was that you could stop people from driving just as easily as smoking, even more so as your not going to be driving inside closed doors.

Seriously has no one noticed this?

I mostly ignore it because I can be random at times as well and he can simply be tactless, but he seems to do it at particularly odd times and in odd ways.

I think its both off the subject and a bad idea to turn the thread into bashing someone. If you don't like their comments, don't read them. It doesn't help the thread at all to post insults, even if you think they're warranted, ya know.

Tobacco has no positive side to it whatsoever.
Spoken like someone who's never smoked. Nicotine cuts stress and dulls every unpleasant sensation, usually to a manageable or negligible level, while making everything good even better. All without impairing one's mental faculties or motor control, unlike every other chemical with comparable effects. There's a damn good reason people smoke, and if you look at the demographics, it's primarily those who are under extreme stress, generally meaning the poorest segments of the population (meaning having higher taxes on them is obscenely regressive, as is the case with almost all vice taxes), as well as those who have to deal with the stress of running things.

I'd really like to throw in the concept of banning nicotine placement in tobacco, but that would be some huge stepping stone toward banning caffeine and I'm not down with that.

What? Tobacco produces nicotine. It's a natural pesticide (like caffeine). Of course, you're only protecting caffeine because you're addicted to it, and wouldn't want to deal with the several days of withdrawal you'd suffer were it banned... *Takes a swig of black coffee*

(And before anyone turns that around on me, I haven't smoked in almost a month, so fuck you.)

What have they banned caffeine in, aside from liquor? Which is, as an aside, complete fucking bullshit. Alcoholic energy drinks taste like shit, being too sweet and fruity, like wine, but they don't go banning wine now, do they?
