Though, I'm not 100% on the definition, but I thought the picture in the first post was called a Pike?
Okay, so I'm by no means clued in on this, but I thought that a Pike was the Spear/Axe combo, and a Halberd is a Quater-staff/Sword combo?

Nope, the sword-pole is a glaive (although the Japanese naginata took the idea farther than Europeans, different tastes and all), the Pike is a either a really long spear, or occasionally long spear with an axe-head.  A halberd is a long-handled axe with an anti-cavalry hook.  And a billhook is just the hook.

but they seem to me like they'd make great solo-duelist-adventurer weapons.  If it was balanced like a quarterstaff, you could use a halberd like a staff, an axe, and a spear.  I know they're not balanced, they're supposed to be end-heavy.  But it would work.

Time to get srs.

The downside to a weapon like that, in a setting like solo-duel-adventurer....is size. It's an awkward weapon under many conditions. It's no good in close quarters except to haft bash, and not particularly effective against swarms of things.

In 1v1 fight in an open space, or massed in formation, it's a great weapon. But when I envision the kinds of things adventurers do and see, the last thing I'd want is a 2 handed weapon that doesn't sheathe. Somewhat of a stereotype, but I think that's why ancillary characters in fantasy are always the ones using halberds. They make wonderful back up, but it's the kind of situational awkwardness you want someone else dealing with.

I guess that's why I've always preferred short swords in fantasy. You lose the advantage in many conditions, but the weapon travels well and functional in most places.

In Soulcalibur one character has a Halberd being Soung Mina. She is focused on powerful vertical strikes and tricky horizontal ones... But she is a differently focused version of the quarterstaff user to the point of sharing several moves.

Technically Asteroth has one too, but he is so large he uses it as an Axe

Yeah, she's pretty much the main character I use >_<  So awesome.

The mighty katana is made of steel folded 10000 times, and beats the halberd anytime.
A naginata is essencially a katana stabbed to the end of a stick, so as to be like a spear or pike.

Ohh yeah Bushido Blade!!!

The Naginata and the Halberd are AMAZING!!!

If you get into the short range of the Naginata and don't kill the person using it they do an overhead spin of DOOM!!!

I liked those games. It never felt like luck to me, though I had a lot more trouble against the gunmen then everyone else did.

Yeah, I miss BB-type games. Imagine how pimp they could be with mouse and keyboard, controlled strikes, dismemberment and today's graphic shinies.

(Also Broadsword in BB FTW. Overhand quick chop = dead.)

Yeah Kilik

My favorites are Talim and Sophitia (though in 4 Cassandra has a better ending... though Sophitia's is still great)

Anyhow let me see...

Halberds were the most powerful weapons in Ultima Online and was the weapon all the guards used

In Demon Souls it was the "Best" weapon apperantly.

Kilik is for babies.  I like Voldo's aesthetic (especially the black and purple unlockable outfit in SC2) and the way he moves like he doesn't have any bones.  He's a lot of fun.

Kilik is for babies.

Not moreso than Talim.

Voldo is great just for all the different poses he can strike from. But I usually use Taki for the Combo-Roll-Combo.

Ignoring the SoulCal stuff,
I am quite partial to the guan dao.
Far superior to the wimpy naginata.
