Re-Releasing DF "classic"
« on: December 02, 2010, 01:08:42 pm »

Ok so now in the third stage of DF, makes me a bit wistful for the "orginal" 2D version.

Given how much has been updated and done, how hard would it be to release an 'updated' version of the orginal 2D Dwarf?
You know, to take advantages of new tools, new commands, new people more efficent ways of doing things etc, but to have the classice 2D map of mountain, river, chasm, Lava, HFS!

I don't think that'd be possible. It seems like a lot of programming work.

Toady has mentioned wanting to include a 2D mode option but said, when he tried to implement it as a surprise, that it was more complicated than he expected. Unfortunately I can't for the life of me find the post where he said it.

Geeze...I'm having flashbacks to when dwarves couldn't walk diagonally, and when you couldn't build walls.

You would think with the orginal game already "done" it wouldn't be too hard to go back and update some of the items.
Of course I don't know the first thing about programing so it may be a lot harder :P

Well, its not you can plug and play the new features and tools. Since those new features are rewrites of the older features, or out right replacements.

You'd probably be writing a 2d mode from scratch.

Though this is just speculation; but hopefully not entirely baseless as the 3d release was even more buggy and drastic then the 2010 release.

Agree, plus that's about the LAST thing *I* want to see from this kind of game - author spending valuable development time on useless graphics.

I would rather have .27 updated to lets us embark anywhere, and name our fortresses. Things like that.

I would think that changing the embark site generating code to always make a map that looked like 2D DF wouldn't actually be that hard. It would have to have some 3D-ness to it, as you'd want rivers to still be on the level below.

Dwarven blood types are not A, B, AB, O but Ale, Wine, Beer, Rum, Whisky and so forth.
It's not an embark so much as seven dwarves having a simultaneous strange mood and going off to build an artifact fortress that menaces with spikes of awesome and hanging rings of death.

People should stop making stupid requests.

People should continue to make non-offensive requests, no matter how 'stupid' they are, and the people who listen to and use them should continue to ignore the ones they don't like.

It's called 'free exchange of ideas' and it is how we find the good ideas out from the bad ones.

I demand a Collector's Edition of the 1.0 version, in an engraved stone box containing miniatures of dorfs from platinum, of the highest quality, menacing with spikes of coal and grass!

The entire content consists of senseless murder, a pile of faceless naked women and zero regard for human life in general, all in the service of the protagonist's base impulses. It is clearly a cry for help from a neglected, self absorbed and disempowered juvenile badly in need of affectionate guidance. What a sad, sad display.

I do like the idea of a 2D re-release with the most recent features included. But something like that will either have to be left to the modders or as a side-project Toady can always do for the hell of it.

My only issue with a re-release would be, wouldn't that make 2D mode a little too easy? At least, much of the time, I've made plenty of 1-Z fortresses out of ease of monitoring with Z-levels only really used for making a pipeline system for forges and waterlines.

And I've tried out the original 2D version. That get's a bit crazy to handle.
