No. It's just that it's human nature for us to be able to pick up any skill with time.

Otherwise we'd be completely disfunctional.

so you are telling me the rules can't handle it? what are you using!?!?!

Not at all. I'm saying that you may not know a thing about sailing, but there is a probability that you'll be able to figure it out. It's not impossible for you to figure out how to move a boat, just because you haven't studied it. This isn't like D&D.

For reference, the game system has its roots in FUDGE/FATE, with most of the mechanics being tweaks, or my own design.

Putting On Socks was my dump stat... I tried to dress for work this morning. Oh god, the blood. It was everywhere.

<_<

One last thing, before I finally pass out. When choosing a Stunt, remember that they can also work off of your Talents to let you do something unusual. Some of the things they can do are:
  • Allow you to use one Talent in place of other ones.
  • Grant a bonus to a skill, under certain circumstances.
  • Provide a way to change how some game mechanics affect your character, such as injury or exhaustion.
A few more Stunt examples:
- Focused Hearing (or sight/smell): (You may focused on one sense, blocking out all others. For that scene, Perception tests using that sense are at [+2], while those using other senses are at [-2].)
- Iron Will: (Your strength of will is so great, you can use Psyche in place of Fortitude, to push yourself through exhaustion or illness.)
- Tough Skin: (For the rest of the scene, whenever your character is Wounded, damage rounds down instead of up to the next category.)
- Hush: (When leading a group closely, anyone within arm's reach can share the results of your Stealth test to hide, move quietly, or remain concealed)

'The great all-rounder': Your tests are rolled off your skill average, rather than that particular skill you use.

I'm tempted to throw in 5 more Talent Ranks at start, for a total of 25. There are a lot of more obscure Talents I was hoping would crop up here and there. Would that help you guys flesh out your characters, or are you guys good?

Personally, I'm feeling okay with 20 Talent Points. Though if I had the extra 5 points, I'd probably improve these additional Talents (which are currently at mediocre):

Academics (Ecology)
Academics (Biology)
Scrimshaw (Question: Is something like cleaning/gutting fish, crabs, shellfish, etc in this category? If that's part of scrimshaw and not fishing, I'd take this talent).

The remaining 2 talents would be spent improving already "selected" talents.

I'm actually a bit confused about stunts: should we select one from your list? If not, should we interpret our own stunts? For example, I have flexible joints listed: would I explain that as a straight up bonus to Fortitude (fitting into small spaces, not getting hurt when an ankle would be normally twisted, etc) or would it be part of Brawling (wrestling) where it would make it easier for me to slip out of a normal "arm-hold"?

Edit: To be perfectly honest, while letting this stunt provide a bonus to Brawling would be fantastic, I have never been in a fight my whole life and have no way of knowing whether or not I can even fight my way out of a wet paper bag.

I'm good at a lot more than I've put down, so probably.

But I don't mind what I've got.

And as for the 'flexible joints', I originally interpreted that as meaning you'd round damage down from falls, twists, sprains and breaks, or blunt trauma.

But yeah, as far as I can see, you just have to flesh yours out with the GM.

Edit: I've updated my character sheet to fit.

And scrimshaw is pretty much like whittling.. Except with bone.
But maybe he's expanded that into all animal crafts.

Thanks for your input Tack - I appreciate it. By the way, your camping style must be pretty hardcore (actually pitching your own tents with a mallet and all)! I've only ever seen/tried the self-prop ones with the zippers.

Re: scrimshaw: Yeah, I guess I'll have to see what  Solifuge says about this. I have definitely worked with things like shells/fish bone/sea creature parts, but nothing on land (no antlers, pelts, etc).

I'm fairly sure that wasn't sarcasm... So I'll go ahead and bathe in the glow anyway.

But yeah, most of those self-prop tents come with tent pegs for the rain covers, as well as in case of windy weather. (If we're thinking of the same ones)

And hitting those tiny things in with a standard hammer is an exercise in anger management.

... Unless you were thinking of a sledgehammer? That would be hardcore.

You make a valid point. It's been changed accordingly.
