When you're first embarking, you select how large of a portion of the world you want to settle on.  The dimensions of that portion are your embark size.

Q: What do you get when you take 100 clear glass windows, 1000 silver bars, 6700 gold bars, and 18,000 marble blocks?

A: A very large wall.

You can change it after you choose Dwarf Fortress on the menu with u, m, k, and h.

be default, your embark area is 4x4. you can make it as small as 2x2, or as big as 16x16, or anywhere in between.

A man would see that as a difficult challenge.
An elf would see that and despair.
A dwarf would see that and say, "Bring it on."

smaller is usually better, because a large embark kills your fps, so your game runs slowly.

But if you have a good computer making a larger embark can let you take from more biomes and have a larger area to collect resources.

Put those sentences together into a paragraph, it's seamless. The hive mind has spoken.
