My Most Exciting Embark Ever
« on: November 30, 2010, 07:40:10 pm »

Alrighty..something pretty interesting here. I've never heard of stuff like this before, and honestly now it happened, I don't wanna look it up at the wiki or something, and spoil my excitement over this:

The second my 7 dwarves appeared on my most recent embark, the game paused, and zoomed to an area 40 z levels below my starting place. It was all dark, unknown territory; an announcement stated "a section of the cave has collapsed" - or something to that effect.

Now, let me tell you a couple of three things.

- I thought cave-ins were disabled in recent versions of the game?
- Why would I get a message about something that happened in uncharted territory, 40z levels below?
- What can possibly cause a cave-in right after the game starts, not during world-gen, and without my dwarfs doing anything?

There's no scraps in my scrapbook.

I asked myself these questions at the embark, but after 5 minutes I had forgotten all about the incident. It would soon enter my thoughts again, though.

When my fortress was about 1 year old, I appointed a record keeping noble, and decided to check my stocks and the now more accurate numbers.

The following is what I found in my weapon stocks - note that I haven't forged or bought a single weapon yet (I'm probably gonna have some Fun with that):

1x Copper Battle Axe, from embark.
2x Copper Pick, from embark.
1x Adamantine Two-Handed sword

Here's the description of the sword:

"This is a masterful adamantine two-handed sword created by an unknown artisan".

I couldn't for the life of me figure out how I got that thing into my weapon stocks. So I turned my attention to another question: "who's wielding this thing?!"

I zoom to the sword. It takes me to a dark, unknown place...40 z levels below.

...yeah.

I can almost hear it calling me...

That's "HFS".

Other then that, I think water falling on a magma pipe can cause random underground cave-ins.  I had one embark where I had about 14 of them at the start before it settled down.

Cave ins sometimes happen down in the magma sea at embark, particularly if a water-filled cavern drains into it (water hits magma, obsidian is created, no support for obsidian, falls down, generating message. If you have a volcano that goes far enough down you can actually watch it happen, kinda cool).

The sword is in the center of an unusual structure in the magma sea. Taking it generates copious amounts of Fun.

A man would see that as a difficult challenge.
An elf would see that and despair.
A dwarf would see that and say, "Bring it on."

The cave-in upon embark is a known buggy thing that happens sometimes, and I think it's just an error involving magma pools or something - it's caused by a magma pool sort of "cutting off" a piece of rock that starts off floating above it, so the first thing that happens is that that portion of rock falls down. And no, cave-ins aren't disabled... unlike the earlier 2-D versions, though, cave-ins don't happen when you have too large rooms without supports but only when you have a section of rock that is not connected to any stable rock at all - however, as long as there is some connection to ground, even the most twisted, hanging features you can build will never cave-in.

As for the adamantine sword - unfortunately, I think dwarves can't wield two-handed swords in Fort mode, although an adventurer of any race could. But you should definitely go down and check it out. If you don't want it spoiled, don't read the wiki; all I'll say is I envy you because I haven't yet gotten what you have on your map... it sounds like a lot of Fun.

A fey mood just added an artifact spear to the list of awesome stuff in my weapon stock.

I now have a Legendary +1 Weaponsmith, a High Master Armorsmith...and my steel production is up and running. This is gonna be an awesome embark.

And I started playing this game last week! :):)

I did it with hotkeys and a stunned miner; it worked, to a degree.

I remember my first embark. The caverns collapsed on that one too, but I didn't know what it was and thought that the dwarves were mining automatically. And then I thought that the ramp icons were pine trees, and tried to cut them down. Good times... good times...
