How would I go about making a zombie-filled wasteland?
« on: November 30, 2010, 06:20:13 pm »

Earlier I was reading the Gotrek and Felix books (if you're not a Warhammer person and don't know who they are, Gotrek is this awesome dwarf death-seeker, and Felix is a poet who while drunk agreed to write an epic poem about his death. They go on adventures) and I was thinking 'Gosh, wouldn't that make an interesting world for a fort?'

In the current one I'm reading, they're involved in an expedition to Karak Dum, a conquered fort that's situated in the Chaos Wastes (an arctic place filled with mutation causing magic dust everywhere; mutated creatures; dark cultists; demons; you know, Fun stuff) There they find what remains of the inhabitants, who spend every day hiding from or fighting for their lives against the Fun stuff that conquered the fort, and utterly convinced that the rest of the world has turned just as bad.

This I wish to emulate. :D What parameters should I mess around with to get a world as evil and filled with undeath and Fun as possible?

Maybe ask around the modding forums. There are zombie apocalypse mods for DF there.

I'm sure you could just spike up FBs and titans to the max and turn up the evil squares up by 35% or so (if there isn't a sufficient spread of regions, the civs will be unable to be placed)
not sure what else you can do by just modding, but that's a start

Perhaps it's possible to mod the civilizations to spawn in evil squares? then you can have the entire map be evil and still be playable.

A man would see that as a difficult challenge.
An elf would see that and despair.
A dwarf would see that and say, "Bring it on."

Rake up evil squares (there was a maximum, related to the map size, but I dont recall the proportion. Fiddle it around. Start by doubling all evil square numbers), and reduce good squares to 1, 1, 1 (I think reducing good squares helps insofar it allows more "neutral" squares for civs to spawn).

I dont think it's worth it, for the record. In the end, undead are only a challenge in the first three minutes of game, as after you've built your base they become little more than stray immigrant killers, and maybe not even that. What's worse: zombies can spawn underground, which will fps-kill you through miasma clouds.

I personally find it more interesting to embark in high savagery areas. Some of those spawn rather nasty and sinister critters (for instance: tundras and glaciers tend to spawn yetis, which are building destroyers), and reduce the megabeast attack threshold (minimum wealth and pop for titan attacks).

I think there's already a zombie mod out there, named appropriately, wasteland. If you wanna do you own, you'd probably need to use [UNDEAD] tag, lots of it.

If you want to learn how to create creatures you could just make a lot of undead style things that were not considered undead by the game. Zombie-likes that roam around as a larger hoard than the game usually flings around and whatever other kinds of things they run into in that wilderness. Might take kind of a lot of time though.

Massively increase cluster sizes and just plain delete groundhogs and other wastes of time from the game. Suddenly, you'll find yourself facing down armies of zombie bears. Make sure to give everything the building destroyer tag, they'll home into your base that way.
