I doubt DF will take so long to reach 1.0 that toady will have to name a sucessor. Though seeing his plans for DF it seems it'll aways be his pet project, so he'll aways be working on it, even after 1.0, or so it seems. He also said if something were to happen to him he would make sure DF (and scamps) don't get left out in the cold.

By the time I finish lawschool (3 years from now) I expect DF to be close to halfway done, with the speed things are going now. Worry not, many of us will play DF by the time they have kids, and their kids shall play DF, and then maybe their grandchildren will play DF, and be told stories by their granpa of how there once was a Toad who had a cat and created a universe inside his hard drive. And then he will tell stories about how elves in his time traded cloth and got burned in magma, about how goblins were once melted and reforged into weapons, about how a dwarf once ate a demon rat and it tasted like SAAAATAAANNNN and about how his human adventurer got beheaded by a peasant with his own axe.

Blizzard or Activision will buy Dwarf Fortress and turn it into a 3D strategy MMO.

There are several countries that would stone you to death just for saying that.

The US would be one of them, if we didn't have an entirely different definition of being "stoned".

Well, I'm a Singularitarian (and I'm increasingly convinced that DF will be the strong, transhuman AI which ushers it in) so I'm not worried about him dying.

However, the talk of succession amuses me greatly, because now I have this image of a thousand-year long line of succession, a civil war between Toady VIII and ThreeToe IX, and so on and so forth. Toady asks for help from Notch against EA, but Notch burns down Toadstantinople instead. Even so, DF lingers on for two centuries before finally being overrun by Sultan Kotick I The Magnificent.
