You may not know me=you can often not know where a room's vents are
In every room I sleep=vents lay there on or near the floor
Waking up at need=to heat the room when its cold
beneath your notice=I guess because you cant alway know when the heats on

Dust.

So small am I - dust particles are very small.
You may not know me - dust is hard to see in small quantities, but easy to see in large quantities. Thus the 'may' makes sense.
In every room I sleep - dust is all over your house, no matter how hard you clean.
Waking up at need - when even a small puff of air blows, dust is disturbed and sent flying, a personification of waking up.
beneath your notice - same as 'you may not know me'.
Though I serve you - skin cells used to protect us from harm before flaking off and becoming dust.

You may not know me -- If you're not an electrician, or are entering an unfamiliar room where you don't know where they are

So small am I - depends on the clock, but your typical alarm clock is small and out of the way.
You may not know me - This is harder to justify, but maybe old people don't know how to work them? Don't know
In every room I sleep - "sleep" means "not being loud and annoying"
Waking up at need - You omitted the word 'you' between 'waking' and 'up'
beneath your notice - hard to notice a clock while asleep
Though I serve you - fairly obvious

As a second guess, perhaps a fire alarm? A lot of the things are the same; the "you may not know me" is again more difficult to puzzle out.
