I've always enjoyed riddles, and I like to share them with others. I figured I'd see how well this works here.
For those who don't know what a riddle is (the term is often used for a simple question-answer joke nowadays), a riddle is a short verse that alludes to a specific person, place or thing. For example, this famous riddle from The Hobbit:
Alive without Breath
As cold as death
Never Thirsty, ever drinking
Clad in mail never clinking
The answer to this particular riddle is "fish."
Alive without Breath - The fish does not breathe, as it is always submerged
As cold as death - Fish are cold
Never Thirsty, ever drinking - The fish does not drink in the way we do, but water always passes through it's mouth
Clad in mail never clinking - Fish scales resemble mail armor.
Here's how the game works. I post a theme, and a riddle fitting that theme. Anyone can guess it, but they are required to post line-by-line reasoning as in the example. This is to help ensure that riddles get solved, as one person's reasoning can help someone figure it out.
Rules:
1. One, and Only one riddle can be active at a time. Contestants who post an unauthorized riddle will have their score set to zero.
2. Each riddle will have three available hints. These will be revealed one at a time, and reduce the score value of solving the riddle. Three seperate people must request a hint for it to be revealed, and a hint must be revealed after three requests.
3. A riddle must be solved within six days. After this time period, the poster must post the answer and reasoning. If I judge the riddle to be fair, the poster gets the remaining value of the riddle in points.
4. Every two weeks, the scores reset, and the player with the highest score sets the new theme.
5. No memes are allowed.
6. Reasoning does not have to be exactly correct (or correct at all) for the score. It merely needs to be present.
Scoring:
1. The base value of a riddle is 31 points. Ten points are deducted for each revealed hint.
2. If the very first person to guess posts a correct answer, a 19 point bonus is given.
