It's not the size that matters...
« on: November 29, 2010, 04:30:12 pm »

...it's the artefacts you put in it.

Yes, noble forum goers, I ask of you a simple task. Find out for me, the smallest a room can be while being of royal quality. Smoothing and engraving by the finest stoneworkers will, of course, be a necessity. High value buildable artefacts, cages with expensive beasts, a room entirely made from gems, all that stuff. But you must actually build it.

Bonus points if everything in the room is vulnerable to magma and can be cleansed with the press of a (possibly artefact quality) lever.

I agree with Urist. Steampunk is like Darth Vader winning Holland's Next Top Model. It would be awesome but not something I'd like in this game.
Unfortunately dying involves the amputation of the entire body from the dwarf.

If it's declared from an artifact of sufficient value, then a single tile of dirt without surrounding walls can be made into a royal room.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

Even better/worse: A single artifact of sufficient value and type can, with four patches of dirt and three other cheapo bits of furniture, create a shared royal dining room, bedroom, throne room, and tomb.

I think if you get a metal artifact going and go quantum on it, you'll eventually make something of enough value.

Of course, in theory. If you're lucky enough to get planepacked, fantastic. But I want to know the actual, achievable room size.

a 1x1 room that is occupied solely by the artifact furniture used to create it.  Now if we rule out artifacts things get more interesting...(I recommend using solid segments of the cotton candy stand.  plenty of highly valuable floors there.)

That's what cages and minecart shotguns are for!  We don't need to control them.  We just need to aim them.

Get a big dwarf civilization, like, say, 6+ world tiles contained in their territory. Embark on a map with sand. Get magma and a magma glass furnace, start pumping out raw green glass, then have a gem cutter cut said raw glass and a gem setter set the cut glass onto stuff. Repeat until you've got a legendary+5 gem setter.

Sometime while you're accomplishing this, when the dwarven liaison comes by, order at least one of every form of gem available, including clear and crystal glass. Purchase at least one of every form of gem when the caravans show up again.

Make a piece of furniture that a room can be defined from, for instance a bed. Stockpile the piece of furniture, a bunch of food and drink, and all your cut gems in a place that has a bed, table, chair, jeweler's shop, and your legendary+5 gem setter. Seal that sector so no one may enter or leave (or use burrows to isolate your gem setter inside), then set your gem setter encrust that single piece of furniture with every single gem that exists.

That piece of furniture will now easily be worth 25,000 or more, well above what is needed to make a 1x1, wallless piece of dirt into a legendary room were that piece of furniture to be placed on it. No artifacts, quantum or otherwise, needed. No metal needed, either, though you could of course repeat this process with a legendary+5 metal crafter and every single metal in the game to get an even more overly-decorated object.

Do this with an adamantine cabinet and then give it to the fort's first cheesemaker.  Because dwarves really really like cheese.

IIRC You can create a royal bedroom that is only 5 tiles big if: 1. It's made of gold and 2. Masterfully engraved.

I remember seeing the math somewhere here before, gonna look into it.

You can make a royal room with a single masterwork (not even artifact) (native) aluminum/platinum statue. For (raw) adamantine, well-crafted will do. Note that it's just those three metals and their ores, as masterful gold and steel statues have values of ☼9000.

To answer the OP's question, one tile of space for bedrooms/tombs/offices, two for dining rooms (chair and table). Just get good artifacts (decorated with adamantine or lots of stuff).

well, it would also be possible for a barrel or bin to be placed in the room containing many high cost items
if it's forbidden does it still effect the value?

I was the one who did the math. In my first post on the forums no less. Hadn't realized that until I just looked into it myself.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

well, it would also be possible for a barrel or bin to be placed in the room containing many high cost items

Items that aren't part of a building don't affect the value of the room they're in, so placing a bin full of artifacts in a room wouldn't help.

You say that as if Planepacked is some ineffable, unique thing that you'd have to be very fortunate to get. It's not (anymore). The method of creating quantum artifacts is known now, and possible to use basically any time. Why, in my current fort I had a moody mason gathering stones for well over 2 years, eventually to make Balekast, "Tonesave," a gypsum millstone worth 3,474,000 Urists, almost entirely from common stone. Had he produced a piece of furniture that is actually useful, I'd have any number of legendary rooms from such a thing.
