Problem with surgery?
« on: November 29, 2010, 04:09:19 pm »

Heyo.

I had two stupid dwarves victims of terrible falling accidents. Actually I've had several more, but they all died. :(

They are seriously wounded and resting in my hospital which is fully stocked except for gypsum powder. They've been resting for about 3 months now, and doctors keep coming in to do surgery, and then move them to another of the beds. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to be... doing anything, as in they're still seriously wounded and still in need of surgery. The doctors will keep going in and doing more, but nothing seems to be getting better.

There is no interruption saying 'Patient not resting.' or anything like some bugs have been mentioned, they move the person to the table which is right next to the  beds and perform the surgery, then move them to another bed (probably because they're dumb and don't realize they should use the same one.)

I'm a bit worried this is a bug, or perhaps their injuries are just too extensive? The surgeons are decently skilled, though not anywhere near legendary.

To add, one is a dwarven child, the other is a legendary wood cutter (I know, right?). The child has right lower arm, right upper leg, left lower arm, left upper leg, left lower leg, right hand and left foot all broken from the 5(?) z-level fall. He is diagnosed as needing surgery, suture, setting and immobilization. He has severe blood loss, cannot stand, and grasp is impaired, and has an infection.

The woodcutter is in basically the same situation, needing surgery, suture, setting and immbilization, heavy blood loss, etc. His lower spine is also broken though along with a smashed open toe.

You mentioned you have no gypsum?
How about splints and crutches?

Yes, plenty of splints and crutches. According to stocks, 16 crutches and 22 splints.

I also have a stockpile of soap in the room that is not forbidden. Thankfully, they haven't bugged it out yet.

Mostly guessing here, but it may be because you have no plaster powder, made from gypsum and similar materials at a kiln. Anything broken in the dwarf probably requires a plaster cast in the surgery.

Or..the medical system is just really buggy, which it is.

I have gypsum, it just isn't stocked in the hospital (mostly 'cause I can't get the stock to move for whatever reason.)

Gypsum yes, put plaster casts?

Edit: http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/mantisbt/view.php?id=2627

applying plaster casts is bugged..so....good luck with that.

not exactly... since you can just fill some buckets with water from a pondfill and cancel the zone then forbid empty buckets

so

who needs plaster when you have arenas? limbless goblins pushing injured dwarves to death anyone?

plaster shouldnt be the issue.  in the current mechanics it can be 100% replaced by splints.

My guess:  Multiple injury sites means multiple surgeries, you listed 7 injury sites on the kid......i wouldnt worry till he/she goes under the knife for the 8th time

Sorry to be the bearer of worse news but your woodcutter is now useless. He'll never stand again.

Euthanasia by magma would be my prognosis.

The child has been under the knife about 20 times now, still nothing fixed. As for the woodcutter, I'll definately berid of the useless sod poor guy.

edit: probably best to berid of both, actually.. hmm!

I had this happen in a fortress with a Novice (very Rusty) Surgeon and an injured child.  After attempting for over a year to patch her up, repeatedly taking her to the surgery table, standing there, then moving her back, the surgeon's skill level finally increased enough for him to successfully complete the operation.
