Seven dwarves, in a cave, with no surface contact... awesome.
« on: November 29, 2010, 02:58:49 pm »

So, I'm two years into my current special fort. Can't wait until my starting dwarves start breeding! The plan is to create a new Dwarven civilization underground, carving our homes from the caverns. Where by "carving" I mean "leave them mostly untouched, but build homes there." Should be fun once we get further down. Building rooms connected by walkways over the magma sea and all.

I like this. Were you lucky enough to start with a nearly even gender ratio?

Be sure and let everyone know how the first forgotten beast attack goes! I'm really intrigued by the idea of growing your village and slowly securing the caverns as you go.

Hehe... Well, actually, I kinda didn't leave something that important to luck. I basically aborted / restarted until I got a 4-3 ratio. I figure down the line, it'll be pretty cool having a sort of three major "families" and imagining some sort of dynamics between them all. Maybe each major House gets its own cavern level, or something. With the house consisting of the offspring of the Warrior getting the magma sea, or something? I dunno. That's planning WAY far ahead.

Eventually I might make a story fort out of it. I have grandiose plans.

Oh, and check the PoI's... already had my first FB bud! I was super lucky, it wasn't even poisonous, although it did squirt some sort of grease all over the dog that it killed.... as in, it stung the dog with one of its tails and grease squirted out... I was kinda worried about that, so I forbade the dog corpse. Just in case.

But yeah, my Warrior with an artifact steel sword made short work of it. He (or she, I forget) started as an axedwarf, but the Fighter skill really makes it not a terrible idea to switch weapons, so when the artifact got made I did that immediately. So far, he's killed a ton of troglodytes, a troll or two, a draaltha, and a lot of zombies.

OK, so I decided that all of my military, when I have enough dwarves to say I have a "military," will have dimple-dyed giant cave spider silk cloaks just because. And, each will have an image sewn on them. So I decided to make my warrior a cloak, sew an image, blah blah.

Yeah, the image was of a forgotten beast. Fitting, since he killed one and all.

Oh, and the situation on the surface is quite out of hand. The immigrants are going wild. There are currently 4 berserk dwarves, and at least that many ghosts running around.

It would be awesome if dwarves kept their last names in families. Then you could have Griffindorf, Slytherin, and Hufflepuff.

That would be pretty cool. As it is, though, I'll probably screw around with custom profession names.

There's options somewhere in the init folder to force nicknames to replace the entire name in the different modes. From there, just rename the Dwarfs. Then you have your 'houses' of Dwarves clearly named for lulz. (read: awesomeness) :P

I did this exact fort before (though I didn't worry about the gender ratio, and ended up taking in 3 male migrants to even it).  The main problem for me was twofold - they wouldn't breed, no matter how few jobs they had to ever do and how nice the dining room was, and the fps death from all the pathing migrants.  As such, I'd recommend that you start taking migrants and putting them into a small room, and then atomsmashing/drowning/melting the fat off of them.

Once I discovered that you can replace all of their names with some options in the d_init file, I started always giving them last names and changing last names when they marry.  Its kinda fun to watch the families grow and be able to more easily see the lineage.

Good luck on your fort!

I generally find that enforcing marriages in small forts takes time, but it can be accomplished by assigning a couple to carry food and drink, locking them in a 1x2 room, then letting them idle. They get unhappy about sleeping on the floor, and you have to let them out every once in a while to restock, but other than that it generally works fine.
